Did you know that 1 in 3 adults who are raped experience it in their own home? That's why telling women not to walk home by themselves late at night won't fix the sexual violence pandemic. We must unite in demanding an end to gender inequality and rape culture. It is crucial that we work towards creating a society where all individuals are respected, empowered, and free from the threat of violence and discrimination. At Bertha's Legacy, we strive for a world where everyone can live without fear of harm or injustice. Please consider donating to help us provide essential services and support to those affected by sexual violence (https://lnkd.in/e4_f5uc6). Your contribution can help us continue our work in empowering survivors and creating a safer, more inclusive society for all. #BerthasLegacy #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #EndTheSilence #JusticeForSurvivors

While violence affects people of all genders, ages, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds, certain populations face heightened risks when it comes to gender-based violence (GBV). Statistics show that vulnerable groups in Canada include: 1. Particularly young women and girls 2. Indigenous women and girls 3. LGBTQ2+ and gender-diverse people 4. Women living in Northern, rural, and remote communities 5. Women living with disabilities How can Canada work to eliminate gender-based violence and promote true equality? It starts with investing in prevention, strengthening legislation, and ensuring accessible support services for all survivors. Support the UN's movement to end violence against women and girls (VAWG) by donating to shelters in your province that provide essential services to survivors across Canada! #EndGBV #SupportSurvivors #GenderEquality #SafeCommunities #Famous5Legacy

Paris Alexander, a nonbinary survivor, endured over a decade of escalating abuse, culminating in a violent incident in 2020 that led them to Sojourner House's RISE shelter, Rhode Island’s only safe haven specifically for LGBTQ survivors. RISE helped Alexander reclaim independence through therapy, LGBTQ support, and advocacy, including citizenship support. However, Sojourner House and similar programs nationwide are now threatened by severe cuts to the federal Crime Victims Fund (VOCA), which supports crucial domestic violence services. Due to policy changes reducing VOCA’s funding sources, shelters and hotlines across the U.S. face closures and reductions just as domestic violence rates surge post-pandemic. Advocacy efforts aim to restore funding, but with limited success, leaving essential services for survivors—including shelter beds, court advocates, and crisis hotlines—at risk. [25Nov2024] International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women I volunteer as a Trustee for the Booth Centre, a charity with the mission of bringing about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and helping them plan for and realise a better future. In that role, I’ve become painfully aware of the intersection of gender violence and homelessness - Domestic abuse is a primary trigger of homelessness amongst women and continues to impact the experiences of women while homeless. - The average age of death for women experiencing homelessness in the UK is 43, half of that of the average woman (85). - 32% of homeless women said domestic violence contributed to their homelessness The negative impact of domestic abuse doesn’t end with the victim leaving the abuser. In many cases, it’s the start of another ordeal: Homelessness. PS. Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023. 60 per cent of these homicides –51,100- were committed by an intimate partner or a family member. #GenderViolence #WomensRights #EndAbuseTogether #Homelessness #NoExcuse https://lnkd.in/e_uCvw-c

Women of all social classes are at risk of gender based violence, a global pandemic which continues to plague women and girls both in their public and private lives. During the 16 days activitivsm on violence against women and in commemoration of the World Volunteers day. I reflect on the impact local women in communities contribute in the fight against gender based violence. There is a need to continue to empower local women, engage them and included them as experts in proferring community based/context specific solutions in implementing GBV programs. Cheers to all the resilient women who have survivor SGBV, to those who are fighting SGBV and to Male advocates who contribute in addressing harmful practices that exercerbates violence against women and girls. “Together, we can build a safer world for women and girls everywhere” #16DOA #Volunteers #GBV
