It’s International Day of Biodiversity! 🌍 Today, we celebrate the array of diverse Local and Indigenous communities working across the BirdLife Partnership, because without them we would not be able to protect and restore nature as successfully. 🤝🏽 By integrating our conservation science with traditional knowledge systems and practices we develop deeper understandings of species, habitats and ecosystems. 🌿 The UN theme for this year, ‘Be part of the Plan’ is a timely reflection of the importance of BirdLife’s partner-centred, civil society conservation model, where we work to ensure people and planet thrive together. SANParks’ Vision 2040—a step in the right direction? South African National Parks (SANParks) has unveiled Vision 2040, its ground breaking new strategy redefining South African conservation for a sustainable future. A result of extensive consultation with stakeholders, including communities living around national parks, Vision 2040 proposes changes to how conservation efforts are implemented and their potential impacts on South Africa’s communities and biodiversity. The plan has several key focus areas: 1. Inclusive conservation: Moving beyond fenced-off areas to create multi-functional landscapes 2. Community engagement: Elevating local voices in conservation decisions 3. Sustainable wildlife economies: Creating opportunities for communities 4. Climate resilience: Adapting ecosystems and communities to climate challenges For more information on Vision 2040 and its potential implications for South Africa's future, read the full article: https://lnkd.in/d2mdSE44 #SANParksVision2040 #ConservationStrategy #SouthAfricaWildlife #WildlifeEconomy #InclusiveConservation #CommunityEngagement #ClimateResilience #SouthAfricanConservation #FutureOfConservation

Special edition of Frontiers in Conservation Science just released with 10 articles giving focus to our understanding of privately protected areas (#PPAs) and their global importance at regional, national and international scales: https://lnkd.in/g5KE95cG
Privately protected areas (#PPAs) are often under-recognised, but can make significant contributions to biodiversity conservation. Despite the proven importance of PPAs in increasing the extent, representativeness and connectivity of protected area networks in many regions, these mechanisms have received less research attention than other forms of protected areas. With fellow members of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) PPA Specialist Group, Sue Stolton and Miquel Rafa, we've edited a special issue of the journal Frontiers in Conservation Science which has just been released: https://lnkd.in/g5KE95cG. The special issue saw the publication of 10 articles, increasing our knowledge of various aspects of PPA networks or programs at regional, national and international scales and informing more effective establishment, management, financing and protection. Thanks to the authors for their contributions: Sarah Brugler, Afshin Akhtar-Khavari, Ben Richardson, Phillipa McCormack, Brent Mitchell, Paul Elton, Munira Anyonge Bashir, Dr. Edwin Wanyonyi, Juan E. WORKSHOPPING IN THE REGION | Last week, FVC’s John Braid, Kellie Bauer-Simpson and Lisa Chappell were back down in the Margaret River region, working with our clients at the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, to conduct community and stakeholder consultation for their Local Biodiversity Strategy that is currently being drafted. A series of three workshops were conducted in Augusta and Margaret River, which gathered valuable local input regarding the Shire’s biodiversity assets, threats to biodiversity, actions to help combat the threats, and other opportunities for protection and enhancement of biodiversity assets. A key component of the strategy will be the 10-year Action Plan, outlining activities, projects and initiatives that the Shire will seek to carry out, to protect and enhance biodiversity assets across the local government area. The strategy will also feature a focus on community engagement, advocacy and the partnerships and relationships that the Shire has, or could develop, that create a culture of stewardship towards the natural environment. For our team, it was wonderful to work with such an enthusiastic and dedicated bunch of people over the two days, generously sharing ideas to contribute to the Local Biodiversity Strategy. #LocalBiodiversityStrategy #ShireofAugustaMargaretRiver #biodiversity #stakeholderconsultation #communityconsultation #consultationworkshops #environmentalconsultant #environmentalconsulting #environmentalconsultingwa #environmentalconsultingperth #perthenvironmentalconsultants #environmentalconsultinglife #focusedvisionconsulting #fvc #projectforgood #projectsforgood #projects4good #fvcprojects4good #feelgoodproject #conservation #naturalresourcemanagement #floraandfauna #flora #fauna #ecology

Africa's biodiversity is one of the richest globally, yet the research crucial to its preservation is severely underfunded. This lack of financial support has become a significant barrier to advancing our understanding and protection of these ecosystems. To make meaningful progress, we need to explore diverse funding avenues, including private sector investments. If your company is committed to environmental sustainability and interested in supporting wildlife conservation efforts in Africa, I invite you to connect with me. Together, we can create impactful partnerships that contribute to biodiversity recovery and ecological research. #Biodiversity #Conservation #Sustainability #WildlifeProtection #CorporateSocialResponsibility #AfricaConservation

Very important issue. The #design of #private_gardens is usually depends on the client's wishes and we can not argue about it.. But we must explain and educate the client why we should think in the direction of more and more natural design. I personally stopped working with private gardens over 5 years ago for the same reason. I worked in the professional landscape company, I liked that team, but unfortunately, the design we were "pushed" to provide at that time, often, was not making any difference, and argumentation оf our landscape team haven't had an influence ...The market worked like this. Unfortunately. Right now, sometimes, I have requests for private garden design and I'm starting the relationships with client from a mini-lecture regarding natural design and natural approaches🤭. Just to see іf we can be on the same wave. More and more people agree with it. But the majority don't. In my opinion, we should have more regulations regarding #NBS, even in private gardening area, because it is not a philosophy, or fancy approach no longer, it is a need. We operate in the nature, with natural resources and we need to take responsibility for it. #garden_design #landscape_architecture #nbs #natural_approaches
Despite our best efforts, our backyards are often death traps for insects. Human activities have brought about the sixth mass extinction event and conservation alone will not save species from decline; habitat must be stitched into our cities. LAF Fellow Betsy Peterson's Biodiversity Victory Garden movement offers simple actions to activate home gardens and interstitial, urban spaces into a rich network for biodiversity. New Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) measures come into effect from today! 🌱 This new legislation means developers will be required to replace damaged natural environments and create at least 10% more when they build new homes. While this is a positive step forward for nature, we want it to have a bigger impact. The Wildlife Trusts have been influencing the evolution of Biodiversity Net Gain for well over a decade — and that's why we're keen to raise the ambition of the new legislation, including by calling on developers to go above the minimum 10% BNG and aim for at least a 20% gain for nature. 🌷 📖 Find out more about the new legislation and our position here: https://lnkd.in/gaxC3cjP #Somerset #BiodiversityNetGain #LandManagement

Local leadership is seen as critical to achieving the #30x30 goal for protected and conserved areas. And Target 22 of the GBF calls for ensuring participation in decision-making on biodiversity for all. But what is the evidence for success? Fauna & Flora asked us to investigate. We found that locally-led protected areas can and do deliver both successful biodiversity outcomes and social benefits, but only if the conditions are right. We also found a big gap in monitoring of the impacts of such projects, which needs to be addressed as part of the wider programme of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 📰 You can download our report here: https://lnkd.in/eCxXwQai #ProtectedAreas #CommunityConservation #Target3 #Target22 #GBFTarget22 #GlobalBiodiversityFramework
