Buildings can’t speak for themselves. (Yep, you knew that already!) So it’s rare (and special) when a building can “speak” via the Architect that shaped it. I had that opportunity on a walking tour of 4 incredible housing projects in Fitzroy designed by KTA over the years, led by the inimitable kerstin thompson herself. Kerstin generously, and with refreshing honesty, shared the successes and challenges of each project. We were also lucky to hear from Associate Principal Lynn Chew about key behind-the-scenes moments. What shone through resoundingly for me is how centered *people* were in both their stories. Clients, current & future residents, builders, neighbours, and even those who had previously lived / worked in the area. A powerful reminder that all housing is, ultimately, a container for lives. Next time you find yourself on a street corner and look up to find housing - try to avoid dwelling on just the height, materials or “style”. Don’t get bogged down by the nitty-gritty. Zoom out. It’s the big picture that matters most. 🔍Think about the neighbourhood it’s in. 🔍The layers of history that corner had / has. 🔍About the lives of those who live there. 🔍If it fosters community and/or an ecosystem. Heritage is about so much more than 'just the building'. It's not simply mansions and grand public structures. Heritage sees it as imperative to preserve examples of places that are touch points and examples of our social and public history. The places that made up the fabric of the communities in which they sat, and the stories held within them. It's also important to reflect on the pressure of fashion and what we consider an eyesore now - will we, will our children and those that come after us, see it the same way? Another consideration is the environmental impact of a complete rebuild verses retrofitting in appropriate ways the buildings that already exist. This seems like a no brainer ... There's always myriad reason to have robust discussions and to not fall into the trap of cliches of this type of building. In the grip of a housing crisis, we may want to reflect on the benefits of what were in the most part, incredibly well built options to give people a home. https://lnkd.in/geZv_sEn

We are pleased to announce that 1-3 Westbourne Grove has officially received planning approval. Concilio supported Valouran with the community engagement, working closely with local resients, businesses, and stakeholders to ensure that the development reflect the needs of the community. Through a series of public consultations, feedback sessions, and constructive discussions, we gathered valuable insights that have directly influenced the design and vision of 1-3 Westbourne Grove. Valouran's vision for 1-3 Westbourne Grove involves retaining and enhancing the existing facade, while constructing a new building behind it with combined floorplates, including a pub on the ground and basement levels, and high-quality residential units above. Additionally, they plan to deliver public realm improvements and incorporate environmental sustainability features into the refurbishment to enhance the local area.
