Diverse Cybersecurity: Unlocking Opportunities New research by ISC2 sheds light on the state of gender diversity in cybersecurity. The findings reveal a significant gender gap, with only 4% of cybersecurity teams having a majority of women, while 11% lack any female representation at all. Globally, women make up just 23% of cybersecurity teams, signaling a need for increased inclusivity in the industry. Despite challenges, there are encouraging signs, with younger women increasingly entering the field, accounting for 26% in the under-30 age group. However, disparities persist, with women's salaries trailing behind men's by an average of $5,400 globally and nearly $8,000 for women of color in the US. Retaining women in cybersecurity careers requires concerted efforts toward diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as highlighted by ISC2 CEO Clar Rosso. Progress being made on #genderdiversity in #cyber Gender diversity in the cyber security profession is improving, according to an #ISC2 report on women in cyber security, which collated responses from 2,400 women who took part in its recent Workforce Study, but there are still significant challenges to overcome if true parity is to be achieved. ISC2 found evidence of several encouraging trends – women now make up a higher percentage of new entrants to the profession than ever before, and are increasingly finding themselves in leadership roles. But challenges around discrimination and equal pay are proving a tougher nut to crack. The average representation of women on security teams now stands at 23%, and with current trends is expected to hit 35% sometime in the next seven years. The current figure rises to 26% among the under-30s but drops off rapidly after the age of 45, when the proportion falls to 13%. #infosec #cyberbaseconsulting #cybersec #cyber #informationsecurity #cybersecurity #cyberattacks #womenincyber

Forrester Research suggests that women only hold 16% of CISO roles in 2022 – up 3 percentage points from 2021. But pay may not be the only issue for women in CISO roles, according to Forrester. Other issues like support by other members of the executive suite, access to or the importance of certifications and shortcomings in succession planning may further add to the challenges for women security leaders. Hollenback believes that education, recruitment, nurturing progression, and executive positions all conspire to limit women's participation in cybersecurity. “Today’s cybersecurity professional has to be a technologist and has to be commercially oriented. They have to be operational, and they have to be regulation-savvy. So, the careers in cybersecurity have never been broader than they’ve been,” concludes Hollenbeck. A good read from Nathan Eddy at ITPro Today. Female IT professionals in #cybersecurity are as skilled as their male counterparts but still face challenges in career advancement and career opportunities, according to a study by nonprofit organization Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and N2K Networks. The study, which surveyed nearly 400 Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) members, showed that women in cybersecurity have the aptitude, knowledge, and skills for career growth, aligning with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. The framework categorizes and defines the various roles within the cybersecurity field. Teresa Rothaar governance, risk, and compliance analyst at Keeper Security, Inc., also pointed to the significant under-representation of women in IT security. "Women remain notably outnumbered in cybersecurity roles despite efforts to close the gap, and men continue to dominate the field, particularly in leadership and technical positions," she said. Rothaar added that gender pay gap persists in cybersecurity, with women often earning less than their male counterparts for similar roles. Isabelle Dumont, CMO at DeNexus, also said that women entering cybersecurity need role models to envision career possibilities and build confidence in their path to success and leadership. "Mentoring can make a difference between a slow-moving and an accelerated career," she explained. "Training on executive presence, confidence-building, or negotiation skills remains constant across all sectors to help women take on #leadership roles," Dumont said. #cyber #infosec #infosecurity #ITsecurity #PR #publicrelations #marketing WiCyS Mentorship Program

While other professions are making up ground, cybersecurity still lags behind in female representation, thanks to a lack of respect and inclusion. Cybersecurity is hardly the only male-dominated industry, but even in contrast to others — like law (53%), accounting (46%), and doctors of medicine (37%) — it lags behind. According to new research from ISC2, women make up just 20% to 25% of the cybersecurity industry. And that figure, it noted, has remained relatively consistent for some years. However, most interestingly, women own executive titles at a similar clip to men. However, a greater percentage of women in security are involved in the hiring process than are men (33% to 24%). In its "2023 State of Inclusion Benchmark in Cybersecurity" report, Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) tracked the ways in which women experience exclusion in the industry. "Respect" ranked as the worst issue on its list, but just behind respect was "career and growth opportunities."... #womenincyber #security #cybersecurity #informationsecurity #respect #inclusion #gender
