🌲 🔥 Wildfire mitigation is absolutely critical, and I applaud 👏 all parties working on it. I'm wondering the chances of the "Fix Our Forests Act" ultimately becoming law and, importantly, how impactful it would be if passed. Are the actions on target? 🎯 From the TD World story posted here, the FOFA purports to streamline regulation and response as follows: ✅ Simplify and expedite environmental reviews to reduce costs and planning times for critical forest management projects while maintaining rigorous environmental standards; ✅ Reduce the amount of frivolous litigation that delays urgent forest management projects; ✅ Promote federal, state, tribal, and local collaboration by creating a new Fireshed Center and codifying the Shared Stewardship initiative; ✅ Make communities more resilient to wildfire by establishing a Community Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and a Community Wildfire Defense Research Program, and; ✅ Allow federal land managers to use emergency authorities to carry out landscape-scale projects management projects on the most at-risk firesheds. #FixOurForestsActs is supported by numerous entities including utilities, conservation groups, and industry advocacy groups. This support alone seems pretty impressive. Will these efforts to streamline action move the needle? What other actions are needed? And 'who' will be most effective in addressing the issue? #wildfire #FixOurForestsAct #utilities #bipartisan

It's gratifying to see the U.S. Congress taking steps to alleviate some of the challenges that have kept #prescriptivefire from being used as widely as it needs to be. Here are some thoughts about where we've been and the path forward: https://lnkd.in/gD4899mN
The National Prescribed Fire Act marks a massive step forward in establishing a streamlined approach to intentional fire, such as prescribed and cultural fire. CWI is proud to support legislation like this that accelerates intentional fire as a critical tool to help increase forest resilience and mitigate harmful wildfire. It’s more important than ever to advocate for wetland protections. One year ago, a U.S. Supreme Court decision removed federal protections from up to 90 million acres of wetlands, leaving many protections up to states. This could have detrimental impacts on our water, critical wildlife habitat, local economies, and flood-prone communities. Read more about the impact of this decision and what YOU can do here: https://lnkd.in/eReftXqn.

This week in NYPIRG Executive Director Blair Horner's Capitol Perspective blog: Protecting New York's Wetlands "The rationale for state protection of wetlands, which include swamps, marshes, bogs, fens, and wet clay meadows, is that these areas provide critical ecosystem services for communities across the state. Wetlands protect drinking water by naturally filtering out heavy metals, toxic contaminants, and other pollutants. Additionally, wetlands offer flood protection, with one million gallons of water being stored for every one acre of wetland, while also mitigating shoreline erosion." https://lnkd.in/ewUkEXvC

The Importance of Controlled Burns: A Key Part of Country Life Living on rural acreage means embracing nature and understanding the land. This weekend, we completed a controlled burn on the family's 40 acre property, an essential part of responsible land management in country life. Controlled burns help reduce the risk of bushfires, manage pests and invasive species, and promote new growth for native vegetation. It’s a practice that’s been passed down through generations and is a vital way we care for the land. For those living on acreage, these burns are more than just a preventative measure – they’re a reminder of how we’re connected to the land and our role in protecting it for the future. Don't forget that when undertaking a burn, you obtain the necessary fire permits! #fire #fireseason #wehadapermit #controlled #burn rural #ruralliving #thisishowwedoit #needabeer #undercontrol #lockyervalley #Queensland

🚫 Maryland Department of Natural Resources Enacts Statewide Burn Ban Dry, windy conditions have increased fire risk across the state and fueled ongoing wildfires The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is implementing a statewide ban on open air burning, effective today, November 1, in all Maryland counties. Extremely dry conditions persist across the state and have led to an above average number of wildfires statewide, and conditions are not expected to change in the near future. The ban will remain in effect until the Maryland Forest Service determines the state has received enough precipitation to reduce the threat of wildfires statewide. On March 12, 2024, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing to discuss findings and recommendations for the Wildland and Fire Mitigation and Management Commission. This hearing provided members of Congress and witnesses the opportunity to discuss new and potential policies to address the nation’s wildfire crisis. TCIA has had a growing interest in wildfire-mitigation and -management strategies, and used the hearing as an opportunity to submit a letter for the record to provide its thoughts on ways Congress can improve vegetation management as it relates to wildfires.
