In PropertyCasualty360 recently, New York Life's Vincent Spaniolo, was asked about the skills needed for those wanting to enter the insurance industry. “They [applicants] have to have some sales experience,” says Spaniolo. “Ideally, some entrepreneurial experience, and they have to be pretty fluent with technology..” That certainly tracks with what we’re looking for in qualified candidates. Sales is all about listening. Entrepreneurship is finding hidden opportunities and going after them full force. Tech fluency? That’s table stakes. Why Did I Get Into Sales at 16? At 16, I dropped out of college with no plan and ended up in a call centre selling PPI. It wasn’t glamorous, but I needed a new direction, and sales gave me exactly that. Being the youngest in the office meant I had to work twice as hard to prove myself. Those early experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and how to connect with people—all crucial skills that shaped my journey. Since then, I’ve sold life insurance, worked as an energy broker, and eventually found my true passion in recruitment. Now, at 22, I’m the founder of a tech recruitment agency. It’s crazy to think how far I’ve come, but taking that leap into sales was the best decision I ever made. Met up with an ex-colleague from Astro , Asyraf Abd Aziz . We got to talking about our sales approaches and it just shows how much he has had to change his sales approach since he joined the insurance industry. In media, we can never really let go of a prospect or client. We have got to be persistent (unless of course its not worth the pain like some clients who have been dropped along the way) because the industry is so small (relatively), where everyone knows everyone and if you lose one client its like a contagious disease and will infect your other clients to drop you as a media solutions provider. For Asyraf Abd Aziz (hope I did not leak your secret 🫢)and most of the insurance industry guys, its all a numbers game. Quality is not the ultimate aim but quantity! And this is true for both agent recruitment or policy sales. Rejection rates are super high but you just have to distance all emotional energy and move forward to the next prospect. Because its a much larger pool of customers and not all your prospect know each other. So even if you argue or have an issue with your prospect, you just start with a clean slate with a new prospect. Of course if you have issues with a lot of prospects then maybe you need to relook at a career change 🫣. In terms of the background of personnel, I would hire someone with a sales background at least. For him, as he learnt along the way not all sales people can sell insurance or recruit sales agents. In fact he pointed out one of his best performing colleagues was a former despatch rider. So sales professionals out there, what opinions do you have about this matter? #excolleagueconversations

The story of how we 14X’d an insurance agency in less than 4 months. The task? Grow an insurance agency. We knew nothing about insurance. But everything about growing a sales team. How did we do it? Let’s start with what we didn’t do. 🚫 cold email. 🚫 recruiting firm. 🚫 A.I. 🚫 reliance on social media. Here’s where we focused. ✅ Getting the current team to believe we could. ☑️ Built a vision and told everyone we could. ✅ Get the current team making more money. ☑️ Communicated that story to everyone. ✅ Focused on two things: culture & opportunity. Then… We hosted IN-PERSON hiring events. My partner and I hosted them in the office. We told the story. We showed them the culture. Brutal honesty about the easy and the hard.
