What better way to honor the morning after National #Nanotechnology Day than with a Carbice co-authored publication with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Stemming from NNI’s #Nano4EARTH program, the paper outlines the ways that nanotechnology solutions can fight one of humankind’s biggest challenges: climate change. The paper, “Nanotechnology solutions for the climate crisis," highlights opportunities and current gaps for those working to minimize the climate crisis and provides a framework for the nanotechnology community to answer the call to action on this global issue. As Craig Green, PhD, Carbice Chief Technology Officer and co-author on the paper shared: “We are not going to fight climate change in a vacuum. One way of fighting climate is to go back to the Stone Age and put all of our modern technologies on the shelf. That's not happening. AI. Data centers. The cloud. They all generate a tremendous amount of heat, and there is a tremendous energy (and CO2) spend required to manage the thermals on these systems. And we still need to continue to bring new technologies like EVs on line which will inevitably bring more heat along with improved capability. We need to manage this heat effectively and reliably to allow these critical technologies to take off. #Nanomaterials, and particularly aligned carbon nanotube technology, are a critical building block of the next generation of thermal solutions that will shepherd us into a more sustainable future.” Key takeaways from the paper include: ⚡ Nanotechnology can help electrify the world through energy storage ⚡ Nanocatalysts can expedite the clean energy transition and the production of low-carbon materials ⚡ Nanotechnology can make energy transfer more efficient in key industries, including the chemical and manufacturing industries, especially through more reliable interfaces ⚡ Carbon capture, a key method for reducing global carbon emissions, can reap huge benefits from nanotechnology The full group of experts collaborating on the article, in addition to Carbice, include Air Force Research Laboratory, U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Nanotechnology Coordination Office, National Science Foundation (NSF), US Army Corps of Engineers, and The Kavli Foundation.
