🌍⚓ The biggest hurdle in shipping’s decarbonisation journey? The lack of scalable and commercially viable zero-emission fuels and #technologies. While the industry is making progress with alternative fuels like #hydrogen, #ammonia, and #biofuels, the path to a green future faces some major challenges: 🚢 Fuel Availability & Infrastructure: We need more investment in production and bunkering facilities for alternative fuels. The supply chain isn’t yet ready for global demand. 💸 High Costs: From initial investments in new tech to higher operational costs, going green is expensive. Shipping companies are hesitant due to the significant capital required for retrofitting or building zero-emission vessels. ⚙️ Technological Maturity: Promising technologies like hydrogen fuel cells and #ammonia engines are still in development, with concerns about safety and large-scale use. 📝 Regulatory Uncertainty: Global regulations are evolving, but a lack of clarity makes long-term planning difficult. Will regulations align globally or remain fragmented? ⏳ Long Asset Lifecycles: #Ships have 20-30 year lifespans, which means many #vessels today will still be in operation when stricter #emissions rules come into play. 💼 Financing the Transition: Securing green finance is challenging, especially for smaller operators navigating this expensive transition. It’s clear that overcoming these hurdles will take collective action across the entire maritime value chain, from #technology innovators to #regulators and financiers. 💬 Want to continue the conversation on decarbonisation? Join us at this year’s Marine Energy Transition Forum in Antwerp! 🚢🌍 Let’s dive deeper into the challenges and solutions driving shipping’s path to a sustainable future. This #forum is your chance to connect with industry leaders, explore innovative technologies, and discuss the key issues shaping the future of marine #energy. If you're serious about the energy transition, #Antwerp is the place to be! 📅 Date: 22-23 October 2024 📍 Location: The Port House, Antwerp #Decarbonisation #MaritimeIndustry #SustainableShipping #GreenFuels #ShippingInnovation #NetZero #MarineEnergy #ShippingChallenges #FutureOfShipping #GreenTech

#WorldHydrogen2024 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, meeting place for the international players in the #hydrogen business, was a blast! Well organized, appropriate accessibility, enough opportunities to talk. We had fruitful discussions with potential partners along the #GreenHydrogen value chain, as there were leading technology manufacturers with a track record of the major projects worldwide, the largest project developers and potential hard-to-abate industry offtakers for whom we are decarbonization partner. Trends identified there: ➡ Economies of scale for hydrogen plants (including alkaline) ➡ Ports (Rotterdam/Antwerp/Amsterdam) play their role as enablers ➡ Focus on shipping and import (including via derivatives as carriers) However, key challenges remain: ➡ Market design is being discussed, e.g. blending, more tradable financial instruments (keyword: liquidity) ➡ The last 18 months have not been used intensively enough to shape the framework conditions for the market. This has left gaps in regulation and has not yet created the necessary infrastructure (keyword: last mile) There is still a lot to do! CU here next year! https://lnkd.in/d87kjx9 Sustainable Energy Council , VERBUND AG, Philip Schwillinsky, Bernd Loder, Klaus Sehling, Florian Marko. #Decarbonization #EnergyTransition #Partnership #MissionV

We're very proud to have been named Manufacturer of the Year at the prestigious edie Net-Zero Awards 2024, an event which brought together leading companies from across a wide range of industries and sectors to recognise key players in the drive to decarbonisation. This accolade celebrates our commitment to driving industrial decarbonisation and the transition to a net-zero economy, and to paving the way for a sustainable future for glass packaging. A key factor in this achievement is our ground-breaking NextGen Furnace technology, which uses renewable electricity to reduce carbon emissions. With a remarkable 64%* reduction in carbon emissions per bottle produced on-site, this innovation has the potential to revolutionise the glass packaging industry. (*based on LCA calculation: January to June 2024) After its first year of operation at our facility in Obernkirchen Germany, our NextGen Furnace has saved 35,000 tonnes of CO2. Other low-carbon initiatives include a hydrogen electrolyser that will replace 20% of natural gas with green hydrogen in our furnace at Limmared, Sweden and progress towards our goal of 100% renewable electricity in all facilities by 2030. #ArdaghGlassPackaging #AGPEurope #sustainablepackaging #NetZeroAwards #industryrecognition

🗣 For the third year, Pau, Capitale Humaine is organising a European Low-carbon Mobility political forum today and tomorrow. 🇪🇺 Ahead of the #EuropeanElections2024, this political Forum aims to provide a clear overview of what has been voted at EU-level in the field of #mobility; to present different scenarios for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050; and for public and private stakeholders to discuss how to accelerate this process. #FuelsEurope’s Communication Director Alain Mathuren will participate in a panel reviewing the European legislation voted in the context of the #EUGreenDeal between 2019 and 2024, in particular the CO2 emission standards in cars 🚘 and trucks 🚛, RefuelEU Aviation ✈, FuelEU Maritime 🛳 and the Renewable Energy Directive #RED, together with Herald Ruijters, Director at the European Commission, David Carpintero, Managing Director at ePURE: European renewable ethanol association, and Rafik A., Director of Government and Public Affairs, Europe/IMO, at the Methanol Institute. Alain Mathuren will also moderate a session dedicated to the Working Group on Monitoring Methodologies for CO2-neutral fuels, which aims to assess potential mechanical and digital solutions for monitoring the use of #RenewableFuels in new vehicles. Marc de Jong, Head of business Development at WRC Promoter GmbH, Cédric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines and Björn Noack, Product Management Market Segment PC at Bosch, will also take part in the discussion to provide insights on forward-looking decarbonisation strategies. We are not on our own in our commitment to become more sustainable. “BASF is also striving for sustainability,” says Oliver Geiger from BASF. 🌱 What could be more obvious than facing up to this responsibility together? As both supplier and customer, BASF has partnered with us to develop a more sustainable material for the SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breaker: a biomass-balanced plastic that is manufactured using renewable raw materials instead of fossil resources. The SIRIUS 3RV2 is used by both Siemens and BASF - for example in the new BASF plant for electromobility in Schwarzheide. 🚗🔋 Find out more about the cooperation here 👉 https://sie.ag/57hoGk #Siemens #Sustainability #LowVoltage #sustainableEP #SIRIUS
