I, for my sins, am a Newcastle United fan so have been intrigued how the Marc Guehi’s transfer negotiations have played out because they offer an intriguing case study in the dynamics of football transfers, particularly when negotiations are conducted by one party in public. When clubs show that there is interest in a player like Guehi known, it can be a strategic move to spark broader interest and ignite a bidding war. The idea is to create a sense of urgency and competition among potential buyers, driving up the player's price and attracting offers from clubs that may have been hesitant. I this case this hasn’t worked as apart from Newcastle no other club has come in with an offer. Although it is a legitimate tactic it can also backfire and signal desperation. When negotiations are brought into the public eye, it often suggests that a club is struggling to close a deal privately and is resorting to public pressure to gain leverage. This can be perceived as a sign of weakness, making other clubs less inclined to engage seriously, knowing they hold the upper hand. Furthermore, players might become unsettled by the public nature of their potential transfer, which can disrupt their focus and form. In reality in all walks of life, public negotiations rarely lead to the intended bidding war. Instead, they often result in drawn-out processes that can damage relationships between clubs and players. In Guehi's case, the best strategy would likely involve discreet negotiations, preserving the integrity and focus of all parties involved. I have some interesting info for aspiring Yellowknife entrepreneurs or real estate investors looking to either lease space to or operate a liquor store (or beer & wine store) in Yellowknife. The Department of Finance issued a Request for Expressions of Interest last week, which you can find on the GNWT contracts page under Event ID 0000007913. The current contracts expire in August of 2025, and instead of going straight out to RFP (Request Proposals) for combined owner/operators, like the current model, the department is splitting the contracts up. They will be issuing four separate RFPs - two to find landlords who are willing to lease space (or build and lease space), and two to store operators. I don't really know what inspired the new approach, but it makes sense that it would be harder to find someone who both owns a building and is willing to operate a liquor store, than to find someone who is in a position to do one but not the other. If you're interested in finding out more, be sure to let them know. I think you have to express interest in order to be involved in the RFP, but I could be wrong about that. The deadline for expressions of interest is Nov 29. And then the RFP will be issued in early December.
