Working with the team at Northern Arizona University across facilities and IT has been a real pleasure and wouldn’t be possible without leadership of Steven Burrell and Stephanie Bauer to bring together the teams to leverage data to help achieve their smart campus goals. Rewind years ago and the industry as a whole was largely focused on analyzing data as it relates to HVAC and energy metering. Fast forward to today, we have integrated 8+ systems and converged 11+ data siloes across static, spatial and live data sets at campus scale. Many of those data sets were traditionally “IT” and provide occupancy proxies that could drive energy efficiency - e.x. wireless access point user proxies, in-room AV systems, or even the scheduling systems managed by the registrar. Why condition spaces that arent used? Not to mention non-university owned data such as the real-time grid emissions data that further correlates against the others to enable load shift and shed opportunities not just when your utility gives you a phone call. Continue to break down the organizational and data siloes to drive outcomes that are simply imperative as experienced engineers age out and load flexibility is critical as demand becomes the new supply. Maybe one day you will even be able to turn those building “cost centers” into money makers! Willow

🌱 Starting a Year-Long Internship at the Oldest & Most Successful R&D Lab in the World: Nature & Biomimicry 🌱 One of my favorite passages in the Bible as a creative and an engineer is from the Book of Job, Chapter 12: 7-8: "Just ask the animals, and they will teach you. Ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you. Speak to the earth (in its many life forms), and it will instruct you. Let the fish in the sea speak to you." I want to share a year's worth of posts highlighting different technologies and design projects that have learned that, although we claim to be the most intellectual species on the planet, there's a lot of intentional design in nature we can learn from to solve current problems—many of which arose from coming out of alignment with nature's homeostasis. 🌍 Why Biomimicry? 3.8 billion years of R&D experience in creating systems that last—that's quite an impressive repertoire, don't you think? Biomimicry isn't just an interesting concept; it's a radical way of rethinking our relationship with the world. By learning from nature's wisdom, we can craft more efficient, beautiful, and sustainable solutions. And it's not just limited to design or engineering—nature also holds lessons for leadership, community, and well-being. I'm excited to explore how biomimicry is shaping engineering, climate tech, architecture, health & well-being, agriculture, business, spirituality, leadership, education, and even parenting. I'll be sharing insights spanning from how termites 🐜 inspired sustainable cooling systems to the way whales 🐋 influence wind turbine blades. 🤝 Join Me This is going to be an interactive journey. I invite you to join me, share your thoughts, and contribute your examples of how nature has inspired innovation in your life or work—or some interesting lessons learned on how it could have. In the meantime, listen to this thought-provoking short documentary by Janine Benyus. If you don't get moved by this, this is your stop, unfortunately 🚉... we have a Kenyan phrase that loosely translates to, "stop the earth, I'm getting off here..." In her words, "it is time to become active participants in restoring and regenerating the planet we live on..." So strap on, it'll be a wild ride. Hope you enjoy the journey. 🌿 🚀 Ready to Start the Journey? The first post drops this Thursday—I'll be covering how the kingfisher bird inspired the design of the Shinkansen bullet train. 🚄 Stay tuned! #BiomimicryHorizons #NatureInspired #SustainableInnovation #BiomimicryInAction https://lnkd.in/gRwNynRC #BiomimicryHorizons #NatureInspired #SustainableInnovation #BiomimicryInAction
