How is the steel industry viewing the future of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production in relation to the availability of scrap and virgin iron, especially when considering projections for future steel demand? Current estimates suggest that while the global scrap supply appears sufficient for today's production levels—where EAF accounts for 30% of total steel production (565 million tons out of 1.88 billion tons)—the situation changes when looking ahead to 2030. With an expected increase in total steel production to 2.1 billion tons and a projected rise in EAF's share to 40%, the scrap supply could fall 21% short of demand, and up to 30% short if EAF reaches a 45% share. Given these challenges, and the uncertainty around how much scrap supply will increase as more buildings reach the end of their life cycle, how is the industry preparing for potential scrap shortages while balancing sustainability goals and production needs? I understand that my numbers are high level and based on estimates and generalities so please take these with a large grain of salt. I do however think it is an important thought exercise that producers are carrying out and I would be interested to know what the results look like.

Greg and Nucor were honored to kick off the second season of the Green Steel Challenge podcast! 👏 Nucor is committed to decarbonization and fostering important conversations about sustainability. Let's keep the conversation going!
