An Essential Resource for #AnimalWelfare and Research ✨ Designing a #ScoreSheet for skin lesion classification in subcutaneous tumor models while applying for Authorisation Form A in Switzerland was a challenging task. At the time, I wished for a resource that was both comprehensive and practical. When I shared this with Melania Osto, she mentioned such a guideline was in progress—and now, it’s here! 🎉 I’m excited to see the release of "Classification of Lesions in Subcutaneous Tumor Models in Mice", created by Melania Osto, Julie Parchet, Andrina Zbinden, Ahmet Varol, and Birte Appelt at AWO-N. This invaluable guideline provides clear, practical guidance for lesion classification and humane endpoint determination, raising the bar for ethical and rigorous research practices. Thank you to the team for this critical contribution to the field!

📢 Exciting News from the Animal Welfare Officer Network (AWO-N)! The AWO-N is thrilled to share the news that two posters developed by a working group (Melania Osto, Zbinden Andrina, Birte A., Ahmet Varol and myself) of the AWO-N are now available for download! These were presented at the last SGV meeting (Nov. 26-27, 2024). 💡 What’s Available? 🔹 Poster 1: “Survey on Subcutaneous Tumor Models in Mice in Switzerland and Lesion Classification” This poster presents insights from a 2022-2023 survey conducted among researchers in Switzerland. It highlights variations in tumor volume measurement, humane endpoint definitions, and skin lesions assessments, underscoring the need for standardization. 🔹 Poster 2: “Classification of Lesions in Subcutaneous Tumor Models in Mice” This practical visual guide is designed to aid researchers and others working with these models in classifying skin lesions and identifying early signs of necrosis and ulceration in subcutaneous tumors. 💻 Both posters are now available for download on the AWO-N website: http://lnkd.in/dgHP_xEy We hope these resources contribute to improving practices and fostering collaboration across the research community. Improving the health and wellness of humans may not be our first thought when considering what Registered Veterinary Technologists do. However, there are many ways in which RVTs are working to protect the public. Here are a few: 🐮 Herd Health - Particularly for meat, dairy, and egg products, RVTs specializing in herd health work towards a safe food supply for us by ensuring animal wellness. 🐭 Research Animal Health - Medical research and testing for some of the worst human diseases begins with laboratory animals, and RVTs in this field ensure that animals are well cared for. 🐶 Pet Health - Through behaviour consultations and client education, RVTs help reduce the injuries sustained through dog bites, cat scratches or other human-animal encounters. 🐱 Feral Animal Health - RVTs often volunteer their time to participate in spay/neuter clinics, thereby decreasing feral animal populations and the associated risks to the public. 🦊 Wildlife Health - RVTs working with wild animals help to mitigate the spread of Rabies, Avian Influenza, Lyme Disease, and many other illnesses that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
