Marine technology can help relieve roadway congestion! Listen to MP James Maloney describe his 1st experience on the Hovercraft with Erika Potrz (She/Her) and Christopher Morgan James Maloney
Pilotage: to direct vessels to navigate on the water passages in ports, coastal waters, inland rivers or lakes.
Also, pilotage: the art of getting lost in sight of land, as opposed to the distinct and far more complex science of navigation, used to get lost in offshore waters.
Today was definitely a case of the first definition of pilotage, expertly done by our HM Jonathan Kidd. Calling into Cowes is the appropriately named ‘MV Waterway’ to load grain.
A view not many see is the ships eye view of the River Medina south of the chain ferry, and just how tight it can be throughout the harbour.
Rule 9 anybody…
Baltimore unfortunately wasn’t the first time such an accident occurred, but we can try for it to be the last.
In 1980, the Summit Venture freighter collided with Tampa's Sunshine Skyway bridge.
This incident led to a decade-long reassessment of bridge design standards ⬇️
While the Sunshine Skyway was rebuilt with robust protective measures, it's unclear whether Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge had similar upgrades before being struck by the boxship Dali.
• Opened in 1977, the Key Bridge had limited protective measures compared to modern standards. The recent collision reignited discussions on the importance of robust fendering systems, especially in the face of large cargo ships.
• Lessons from the Skyway Bridge disaster were documented by the National Transportation Safety Board in 1981 and later incorporated into national safety standards in 1991, outlining protection requirements for bridges.
• In 2002, Webbers Falls bridge collapse highlighted persistent risks, especially when protective measures are inadequate to safeguard critical infrastructure.
• Recent cases demonstrate that modern fendering systems can mitigate the impact of collisions, highlighting the importance of structural resilience in bridge design.
We can be assured, the NTSB's investigation into the Baltimore accident will examine various factors, including pier protection.
As the maritime industry grapples with these challenges, the focus remains on enhancing safety and resilience to prevent future tragedies.

#TRU looks to be a rare & much needed success story for major infrastructure projects. So many projects could learn from TRU and Neil Holm’s ethos:
“I think it’s about doing the simple things brilliantly. ‘How quickly can you start work? And how productive is the work when you’re in that blockade?’ If you have people standing around when you’re trying to deliver things, that’s very expensive.”
We’re often guilty of throwing money & red tape at problems which can be solved (often better so) by enabling skilled people to get on with what they’re brilliant at. Great work Gordon Kells & all.
Head of Communications, Network Rail, TRU Programme. Former news controller, BBC News. A senior leader with over 30 years working in the business of storytelling locally, nationally & internationally.
Great to see the #TRU getting pick up in the Sunday Times. Fab work Alec Herron and thanks to all involved who made it happen.

"While only one element of an entire Hunter Douglas’ automation ecosystem, the PowerView Pebble Remote embodies the notion while a good design may look right, a great design can literally feel so." Read on for more about Fred Bould of bould design's take on the unique design and evolution of the Pebble remote— featured in Design Milk.
