How do we strengthen the broader systems that health innovations rely on to thrive (and not just public systems!)? Salient Advisory's latest report on health product access innovations in Africa is worth taking a look at. The key recommendations—simplifying regulations, financing evidence generation, forming partnerships, and evolving payment approaches—deeply resonate with my own work in the private healthcare sector across Africa. I particularly appreciated their making a direct link between innovators and the broader ecosystem—the hundreds and thousands of manufacturers, providers and public health institutions reaching millions. These are the real stars of healthcare in Africa, yet they often go underappreciated in discussions about scaling impact through innovations (the shiny objects spotlighted by the impact investment and philanthropic communities). Also noted in the report a growing eCommerce sector for pharmaceuticals. I’m seeing these innovations everywhere, including evolving models of #ePharmacies, #onlinepharmacies, direct-to-consumer approaches and others. Real systemic impact will only happen when these models work as part of a broader, strengthened ecosystem—one that includes manufacturers, hospitals, and governments. While more research is needed to assess their ability to sustainably reduce costs and expand access to underserved populations, I'm excited to see these solutions evolve!

Salient Advisory does excellent work supporting the growth of the healthtech ecosystem in Africa. PharmaSecure is proud to be featured once again this year as one of the top 31 healthtech innovators out of a pool of 364 compiled and researched by Salient. Counterfeiting and diversion are major challenges in drug supply chains around the world, and Africa is no exception. A UN report recently found that 500,000 people lose their lives in Sub-Saharan Africa each year because of falsified or substandard medicines. There can be no higher priority than fighting this deadly problem, and we're proud to be doing our part. Thanks for keeping us motivated, Salient Advisory! Absolutely spot on! This is exactly our approach at the Digital Health Interoperability Network (DHIN)- creating a neutral and collaborative space where stakeholders can come together to learn, refine, and expand upon their existing solutions. Moreso, incorporating standards into our legacy framework is the bedrock of building an enabling ecosystem. There’s quite some research pointing to digital health creating a fragmentation epidemic because we’re building first and standardizing later. Our approach is really simple: set standards from the outset to ensure interoperability and bring all relevant stakeholders together, not just to learn but also to be empowered to contribute to re-shaping policies that directly impact them.
