⭐ Student Spotlight ⭐ Meet Lenna K., a current George Mason University – Costello College of Business student with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. Lenna is a Finance & Accounting Intern with General Dynamics Information Technology. She shared that, "This summer, I will be working as a Finance & Accounting Intern at General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). I received assistance from the Costello Office of Career Services in their resume review sessions, interview preparation workshops, and career advising sessions to help me determine what fields and companies would best suit my area of interest. For other students, I always recommend having multiple people you trust review your resume, along with constantly updating it yourself. I also strongly suggest students apply for any job they feel they are interested in, even if they do not meet all of the qualifications. There is a learning curve with every role, and most of the time, the skills a student has already learned, whether in the classroom or otherwise, will transfer over. More likely than not, you will be asked back for an interview, and get closer to an offer." #CostelloMeansBusiness

If you’re a BROKE Muslim but want a solution, this post is for you I've been getting lots of career questions lately. Here's how I would approach it if I were 18 again. 🎲 1. Choose the game you want to play. (i) Corporate: Investment Banking, Corporate Law, Software Engineer (ii) Business: Learn the ropes until you can start your own. (iii) Internet money: Brand > products, services, courses, paid community. ➡ 2. Head in the right direction. I always speak to students who want to do X but are doing Y instead. You can't walk down one path and expect to end up at the destination of another. 🏃♂️ 3. Velocity →I applied to 100 jobs before landing my first internship. →I posted 300+ times before I got traction. →I've successfully failed many businesses (yet to smash one). Remember, failure is a feedback loop. If you learn something every time you fail, then it's better to fail 100 times in a 6-month period than to fail 50 times over a 2-year period. 🥵 4. Consistency This is where everyone falls off and the most important factor. Your ability to do something for an extended period of time (think 2 years plus) without seeing results and facing consistent rejection will determine your success.

This is the most important slide I WILL ever make ⬇️ An interview is literally an exercise in which the interviewer wants to find out as much as possible. Why? To see if you're a fit for the role they're hiring for. That's it. The easier you make it for them, the better your chances are ✅ This doesn't matter if you're interviewing for Equity Partner level at a top US law firm. Likewise, if a vacation scheme position as a summer intern at a law ✅ Clarity, strategy, and structure will lead to interview success ✅ Knowing every technical component of a private equity deal - such as the financial engineering components involved within, wont ✅ If you can explain clearly, you're on the track to success ✅ And again, going to a top university doesn't mean you can structure answers well.... 🤯 3 reasons why interns with multinational background can lose the return offer Over past few years at JPM, I have witnessed a lot of summer interns fighting for their full time return offer. I still recall reading from online forums/hearing from students "you can easily secure your spot at investment banks if you're pretty or from a rich family" Well, not necessarily. There was this intern (let's call her N) on the floor speaking multiple Asia languages, packaging herself as a social queen, and sharing what awards she won in the past. 1️⃣ Being immature Despite N being very extroverted and outgoing, she sometimes appeared immature while trying to fight for visibility. There was a time I was having a serious discussion with the other A&As (Analyst & Associate) and she directly stepped into our circle with a "I got something to share" look. As we continued our conversation, we felt a bit uncomfortable being stared by her and asked whether there's something we can help her with. She said she would like to ask an Analyst within our circle for help. We asked "is it urgent-urgent?" and she said yes. Yet, the Analyst went for help told us afterwards - it's not something urgent at all, so we could tell N was just trying to fulfil her own needs by interrupting our conversation. 2️⃣ Not exhausting all the available resources for problem solving Echoing to the previous point, N was looking for an Analyst for Excel support. Yet, the Analyst shared these questions were Google-able. Asking questions that can be addressed online is definitely not going to reflect you well at work. 3️⃣ Using a wrong approach to seek attention N was active on the floor and always had small talks with colleagues. While it's a good thing to maintain good relationship with others as an intern, N always highlighted or hinted how late she worked at night. She might thought this could show her being a diligent intern. Yet, this could backfire her - you might 1) appear incapable of handling tasks assigned by your manager, 2) make others reckon the workload assigned by your manager is unreasonable and 3) appear inconsiderate about your manager's image (as this would negatively affect your manager's image). In fact, we all have been through your journey before and we have a clear idea about the workload of interns from different teams. (instead of stressing how late you work till, you shall strategise how to let us experience your quality work) These are the red flags alerting us and N at the end didn't receive the full time return offer. (think about it this way - if she can be converted as a full time, are you comfortable to have her manage clients on your behalf?) 👨🏻💻 Remember, being extroverted and outgoing does not necessarily mean you are having an unfair advantage. Summer employment can be an excellent time to integrate the #NextGen into the #familyoffice or #familyenterprise or #familybusiness. There are a plethora of good reasons to hire your children for summer jobs: 👷♀️get them up in the morning to be productive and purposeful, 👷♀️spark curiosity that can lead to an unexpected and inspired educational pathway, 👷♀️seek feedback from their lens which may lead to firm innovation and improvment, 👷♀️give them an opportunity to experience real world matters in a safe manner, 👷♀️provide an opportunity to learn and model appropriate professional work behavior, 👷♀️mature through first-hand experience, 👷♀️appreciate the value of earning money (and experience paying taxes), 👷♀️shared learning in discussing the business from parent-child and child-parent perspectives, 👷♀️learn how to appropriately interact with non-family employees, 👷♀️ provide a tax deductible allowance, 👷♀️fill an important business need, 👷♀️ intrigue them into a future with the family business.
