The Challenge of Defining Sustainability in Building Design 🏗️🌍 A recent Bloomberg article explores the shift from net-zero to climate-positive buildings, highlighting how the construction industry is pushing for more sustainable solutions. However in this article, Scott Balmforth, Director at TERROIR, raises a critical concern regarding the accuracy of current carbon accounting practices in building design. As Scott explains: "For example, because under the biogenic method, more timber means more carbon absorbed, it can make the building look more “green” if you add more timber than you technically need — an obviously absurd approach if you’re truly attempting to create a building that treads more lightly on the planet." Such sharp practices are “alive and well” in the construction industry, Scott explains, the consequence of a lack of clearly defined parameters for how to measure impact: "The industry is not at the point where we can really define what it is ourselves.” This highlights a key challenge in the industry—without clear, universally accepted tools and definitions, sustainability claims remain vague and open to manipulation. In Denmark, the Danish Consumer Ombudsman has warned that claiming a building is "sustainable" constitutes greenwashing under danish legislation, since no building can be proven to meet such standards under current measurement frameworks. As an industry, we must address these gaps and push for clarity in how we define and measure sustainability, while at the same time be transperant about both the positive and negative impacts of the buildings we create. TOWARDS CIRCULAR ENERGY RENOVATION IN BUILDINGS Reducing environmental impact in energy-renovations of existing buildings Our research report is now available for download! While there are policies, guidelines and innovation programmes for new #circularconstruction, these are still lacking for #circularrenovation, despite 70% of material emissions in #buildingconstruction are linked to the #renovation task. Exciting collaboration with Copper8 | Stichting W/E adviseurs duurzaam bouwen | Metabolic | NIBE experts in sustainability | Nieman Raadgevende Ingenieurs | Marjet Rutten | Alba Concepts. | LBP|SIGHT | SGS Search | Delft University of Technology | Eindhoven University of Technology | Circular Catalyst | Dutch Green Building Council | Topsector Energie | TKI Bouw en Techniek. Thank you Cécile van Oppen and Gerben Broekhuijsen for your wonderful guidance and keeping us together. Key findings: - 70% of material-related emissions in #construction are linked to the #buildingrenovation task. - As much as 40% of #embodied (material related) emissions can be avoided trough #circular #renovations - The choices made during renovations, such as material selection, can contribute significantly to reducing the impact of renovations. - Choosing circular materials has a reduction potential of order of 27 - 37% for Environmental Cost (EQI) and order of 28 - 41% for Global Warming Potential (GWP). - The so-called "CO2 payback period" of the materials used is between 2 and 7 years. - As soon as circular renovation is chosen by using, for example, bio-based and reused materials, this CO2 payback time drops by 2 years. - Around major cities, there is the most potential for material reuse as a result of energy renovations. - Most of the environmental gains on the demand side of circular renovation are in housing renovations (both private and rental). - Most of the environmental burden on the supply side of circular renovation is in the area of installations, and especially heating installations. By designing circularly, almost 80% environmental gains can be realised. #notimetowaste #urgency #circulardesign #circularbuilding #architecture #sustainablearchitecture #transformation Time to get started with circular energy renovations. #SustainableBuildings The phrase "sustainable buildings" is quite ironic. Sustainable buildings go way beyond just placing some greenery on the facade. It's about a whole mindset shift. It should be about energy-efficient designs, using renewable materials, water conservation plus the overall impact throughout the building's lifecycle; making sure every aspect, from construction to operation, minimizes the impact on the planet.
