A few days ago, we had the pleasure of participating in the Barcelona Wine Week 2024. It was a great experience, that gave the opportunity to high quality Spanish wines to be recognized on a global stage. In fact, over 20,000 visitors from all over the world came to taste wines from 952 wineries and more than 100 experts participated, showcasing the current trends of the industry. However, as this Meininger’s international article highlights, the Spanish wine industry is facing many challenges, with exports declining in markets like the US, and still not recognized a the level it should be. https://lnkd.in/dxsP4neD We are optimistic for the future of this industry as we experienced an increased quality and diversity between different wine regions. We could see many of those efforts at the BWW. However, many more actions need to be taken place in order to continue positioning Spanish Wines at the level they deserve in the Wine World #BarcelonaWineWeek #WineCrush #SpanishWine #WineLovers"

One of the biggest changes that has happened within the last two years is the opening of Bordeaux’s La Place distribution system to wines from outside Bordeaux. It seems paradoxical that a group of distributors who are intimately bound up with the history of Bordeaux are now distributing wines from places as far-flung as Argentina and South Africa. Not only that, but this turn of events is reshaping the global fine wine market. In Episode 4 of Inside La Place de Bordeaux, we explored the world of “beyond Bordeaux”. Our latest article, available to Areni members, summarises five key findings from the episode:

'Table Wine' or 'Vino da Tavola' The original official classification of what we now know as Super Tuscans. Italian fine wine, particularly from Tuscany, has only emerged prominently in the last 40 years, led by a group of renowned dynasties - Antinori, Rocchetta, and Frescobaldi. These Tuscan pioneers introduced Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, alongside barrique ageing - enhancing the wines' longevity. They also popularised single vineyard labels, allowing Italy's key investment wines to cement their reputation. This success was not without challenge. Wines featuring Bordeaux varietals initially clashed with Italy’s DOC/DOCG regulations and were classified as Vino da Tavola or "Table Wine", Italy’s lowest quality designation... until a Sassicaia outperformed top Bordeaux wines in a 1970s Blind tasting. The success of the Super Tuscans spurred a re-evaluation of Italy’s wine laws. By the 1990s, a new designation, Toscana IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), was introduced. Super Tuscans like Tignanello, Sassicaia, and Ornellaia became international symbols, blending Italian soul with Bordeaux-like structure. Interested in investing in The Italian Syndicate?
