There is still a pervasive fear of change within the #wineindustry Last week I visited three renowned wineries in Napa. They all had the same fear: transitioning from familiar practices to new, unfamiliar ones. Why is this especially interesting? These are modern, sophisticated brands that convey progressiveness and innovation. Yet they operate the same way they did two decades ago 🤯 This dichotomy fascinates me. Wineries are losing ground to other products, not just more strategic competitors but alternative beverages and spirits as well. These companies are often new brands, under highly strategic leadership, know how to run efficient operations, know how to use data to their advantage, and are highly profitable. To stay relevant and survive, wineries must operate with the same mindset. Embrace change. Lean into better ways of doing business, not shy away from it. Not miss out on opportunities to increase profits or acquire new customers. Can the wine industry find a way to retain and honor its beautiful soul AND support sustainable, advanced businesses? I believe so. Many wineries on InnoVint showcase the beauty in striking the perfect balance of tradition and innovation everyday. And that gives me hope.

My ride today spied some mature vines doing their thing. Standing majestic. Soaking in the rays and breeze. It is the mature vines that yield the robust flavors you come to love and respect from a Napa Cab. Seeing old vines mixed among the new vines makes me appreciate a multi-generational approach to wine making. It takes on average 3 - 4 years for a new vine to produce grapes qualified enough to be picked and incorporated into the wine making process. If we think about on-boarding new talent, we could borrow from the vineyard. Mother Nature appreciates growth cycles. Do we as leaders of organizations pay respect to the nuturing cycles it takes to produce a viable outcome? The next time you enjoy a Cab from Oakville. Think about the vineyards and the maturity of the grapes that make you smile.

I have worked with B Corps and B Lab for about 15 years and one of my takeaways from this great article published by The New York Times and written by Eric Asimov is how competition among wineries has accelerated adoption of and adherence to the movement in that industry. The dynamic is familiar: when one industry player becomes certified, the pressure on their competitors ramps up thanks to healthy competition. And becoming certified is not an exercise of being 'dusted and done.' Once the values of stakeholder capitalism take root, companies thrive on continual improvement.
While organic and biodynamic certifications have long been valued in the winery scene, there's been a glaring blind spot when it comes to how workers are treated. But that’s changing. From Oregon to Bordeaux, wineries around the world are recognizing the importance of social sustainability, seeking #BCorp Certification to signal their commitment to people and the planet. “B Corp seemed the most complete and exhaustive commitment to our environmental and social goals.” - Saskia D., Chief Executive. In his latest article for The New York Times, Eric Asimov explores how these three B Corp certified wineries — Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, Sokol Blosser Winery and Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery — are reshaping the narrative of what it means to produce exceptional wines responsibly. 🍷🍇 Uncork the full story here: https://nyti.ms/3x0mN8o Sarah Schwimmer Alex Sokol Blosser Charlotte Levitt Felton Road Wines Limited Champagne Bollinger Champagne Charles Heidsieck Avignonesi Benjamin Bridge Ridgeview Wine Estate Rathfinny Wine Estate Chehalem Winery Stoller Family Estate Soter Vineyards

Our CEO, Joanne Newborn just returned from Portugal, taking a tour of the Douro Valley and visiting a few incredible wineries. The messaging was the same, as I’ve heard from other countries, “We have too much wine, because people aren’t buying and drinking as much.” In fact, although 2024 was an incredible year for the grapes, many vineyards were deciding not to harvest all of them, and just let them die on the vine. It is heartbreaking for someone who spent decades in the Wine & Spirits business. Why is this important? While the story is sad, it isn’t going to help to sell more. Yet data will help tell stories that are “win” for on & off premise accounts, and knowing HOW to use the data and WHAT to do with it, is what makes data so powerful. At our upcoming invitation-only Executive Forum we are sharing some ways to do this. We recently sponsored WSWA’s Women’s Leadership Council Conference and we will be sharing some key insights, data, and 2025 predictions from the conference, and specifically from VIP and Sip Source that will help you and your teams to see how to use this information to take action in Q4 2024 and set up your Q1 2025 for success. Join us on Friday, October 25, 12:00 noon ET for a conversation around “Data-Driven Success: Empowering Wine & Spirits Suppliers & Distributors to Dominate Q4 2024 & Lead Q1 2025." Why you should consider joining the conversation: -Our Executive Forums are exclusive and by invitation only -We will be sharing expert insights during the forum from decades of experience in the Beer, Wine & Spirits Industries -You will have the opportunity to have real-time conversations with high- level leaders like yourself, in the Alcohol -Beverage Industry who are facing similar challenges -This is a great opportunity to expand your network leadership skills -All attendees will receive a high-level recap of the most pertinent key take-aways If you would like to request an invitation for yourself or someone at your organization who may be interested please email us at Concierge@NewbornLeadershipEvolution.com and say “October Executive Forum” and we will send you details.
