What is Grafting? Understanding Its Critical Role in Modern Viticulture. 🌱 Grafting is a vital technique in viticulture where the top part of one grapevine is attached to the root system of another, allowing them to grow as one. This method is crucial for keeping vineyards healthy and productive, ensuring the quality of the grapes used in wine production. 🔙 History: European settlers struggled to grow Vitis vinifera in North America due to pests like phylloxera. This tiny insect, brought to Europe in the mid-19th century, devastated vineyards by attacking their roots. The crisis led to grafting European vines onto resistant American rootstocks, a method that saved the wine industry. 🌍 Geography: Phylloxera affects vineyards worldwide, but some areas like parts of Australia, China, Chile, and Mediterranean islands remain unaffected due to quarantine measures or natural soil conditions. By the 1990s, 85% of the world’s vineyards were grafted onto resistant rootstocks. 🔬 Science: American grapevines resist phylloxera because of their anatomy. European vines’ anatomy makes them vulnerable. Grafting involves precision and compatibility between the scion and rootstock, with success depending on many factors, including warm temperatures and high humidity. Grafting showcases human ingenuity in overcoming agricultural challenges. By understanding and utilizing this technique, we can continue to produce high-quality wines and maintain healthy vineyards for future generations. 💡 So next time you're looking at a grapevine, notice the graft union where the desired variety was grafted onto a rootstock. If milk gets bad, it becomes yoghurt. Yoghurt is more valuable than milk. If it gets even worse, it turns to cheese. Cheese is more valuable than both yoghurt and milk. And if grape juice turns sour, it transforms into wine, which is even more expensive than grape juice. You are not bad because you made mistakes. Mistakes are the experiences that make you more valuable as a person. Christopher Columbus made a navigational error that made him discover America. Alexander Fleming’s mistake led him to invent Penicillin. Don’t let your mistakes get you down. It is not practice that makes perfect. It is mistakes we learn from that makes perfect! ❤️ #OPENTOWORK #ANY

“You can make good wine or bad wine with good grapes,” Leal da Costa likes to say, “but you can’t make good wine with bad grapes.” Maps aid the connection between viticulture, the cultivation of the grapes, and enology, the winemaking. Symington’s winemakers record the changing conditions and the corresponding health of the grapes and soil by using an enterprise geographic information system (GIS). It allows them to track the variables for each of the family’s 27 estates.Images and data are collected for each vine and grape bunch to time treatments and harvest. The health and ripeness of every bunch of 53 different varieties of grapes of the Grape Library project managed by the R&D team, along with the maturation network, get tracked in GIS. The data is used to create maps that guide field crews across each winery. GIS is a perfect fit for an organization that emphasizes quality over quantity!!try it out if interested in precision agriculture. #Esri #gis #map #remotesensing #precisionAgriculture https://lnkd.in/dnZuk5Ak

More wine tips!! Get specific when you’re searching for a wine. Geography specific. AVA (American Viticultural Area) matters but isn’t always recognizable by everyone. So just look at the wine label for more specific geography. Example: “Washington State” on the label is not as specific as “Chasing Crows Vineyard.” Expect that the vineyard specific wine is likely more special. Looking closer at these wines whether you’re having a glass on while on a work trip or trying to find a special bottle to bring home… focus on geography. Back later with more pro-tips!! Cheers! And cheers to Kiona Winery & Vineyard (check out their wines, link in comments), cheers to Red Mountain AVA!
