#𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 #𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟓 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐀𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 A faction of South Sudanese opposition groups, including the National Salvation Front, South Sudan Movement for Change, and the National Democratic Movement-Patriotic Front, has concluded 3 days of talks in Rome. Led by Thomas Cirillo, Emmanuel Ajawin, and Alex Kata, the discussions aimed to make the Tumaini peace initiative more inclusive. The talks, facilitated by the Community of Sant’Egidio and Kenyan mediation, resulted in the formation of a parallel structure of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, with Thomas Cirillo appointed as Chairperson and Alex Yata as Deputy. 𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 Flora Gabriel Modi has been dismissed as the mayor of Juba City Council by Central Equatoria State Governor Augustino Jadalla Wani. She has been replaced by Johnson Swaka. Additionally, the governor dismissed all three deputy mayors, including Mogga Franco Wani, Thiik Thiik Mayardit, and Juma Diyo. The reasons for the dismissals have not been specified, but it reflects ongoing administrative changes within the city council. 𝐔𝐍 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬’ 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 During a virtual briefing to the UN Security Council, Nicholas Haysom, UN Special Representative to South Sudan, stressed the need for the government to prioritize the payment of civil servants’ salaries and the provision of basic services. The failure to pay salaries is contributing to social tension. The UN Humanitarian Office warned of potential famine due to floods and ongoing conflict, with over 9 million people requiring humanitarian assistance. Edem Wosornu from OCHA highlighted the urgent need for action to prevent famine between June and January 2025. 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐑𝐂 Fish transporters are urging the government to reopen trade routes with the Democratic Republic of Congo after Ugandan authorities seized truckloads of salted fish due to documentation issues. Mangar Akuot Yuang, representing fish traders, has called for the Ministries of Livestock and Fisheries and Trade and Industry to engage Ugandan authorities to resolve the issue or establish an alternative route to the DRC.
