ONLINE SHOPPING in #vietnam generates numerous SMALL, LOW-VALUE ORDERS. It significantly IMPACTS the ENVIRONMENT. The PACKAGING-TO-PRODUCT RATIO is SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER compared to traditional retail, according to Doan Quoc Tam, a consultant for WWF speaking at the Sustainable E-Commerce Trends in the Digital Era seminar on November 21st, 2024. Other key findings presented at the seminar include: ⚠️ Promotional strategies like VND1,000 (US$0.04) items and free shipping, common on e-commerce platforms, encourage IRRESPONSIBLE SHOPPING HABITS. (WWF) ⚠️ 37% of Asia-Pacific consumers DID NOT PLAN their most recent online purchases, while 47% avoided buying online because they feared making impulse purchases. (NielsenIQ Vietnam) ⚠️ IMPULSE BUYING worsens the environmental threat as customers often place MULTIPLE ORDERS in SMALLER, SEPARATE PACKAGES. (NielsenIQ Vietnam) ⚠️ Sellers need to PACK even LOW-VALUE PRODUCTS INDIVIDUALLY, contributing to HIGHER WASTE. (WWF) ⚠️ #vietnam uses 2.7x the PLASTIC PACKAGING PER PARCEL that #china does. (WWF) ⚠️ The LACK OF CLEAR CRITERIA for green products and services hinders efforts to promote sustainable practices on e-commerce platforms. (TikTok Vietnam) ⚠️ STARTUPS often claim their products are eco-friendly but FAIL TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE of reduced carbon emissions or other sustainable attributes. 🗑️ Size of the issue 📈 🛍️ #Vietnam's #Ecommerce industry has generated over 300,000 tons of #packaging waste comprising cardboard, foam and #plastic shockproof materials in 2023, sparking environmental concerns, according to an expert. 🎙️ "E-commerce significantly impacts the environment, especially through the use of packaging," Doan Quoc Tam, a consultant for the World Wide Fund for Nature, said at the Sustainable E-Commerce Trends in the Digital Era seminar on Nov. 21. 📦 He cited postal service data showing that in 2023 over 1.8 billion parcels, requiring 160,000 tons of cardboard and 145,000 tons of plastics like foam and bubble wrap, were delivered. 💬 "Online shopping generates numerous small, low-value orders. The packaging-to-product ratio is significantly higher compared to traditional retail." 📰 Speaking to VNExpress, he lamented that promotional strategies like VND1,000 (US$0.04) items and free shipping encourage irresponsible shopping habits. ♻️ Sellers need to pack even low-value products individually, contributing to waste, he said. Vietnam uses 2.7 times the plastic packaging per parcel that China does, he said. China uses 157,000 tons of packaging (including 18% plastic) for one billion parcels, while Vietnam uses 166,000 tons, with over half being plastic, he added. 💹 Vietnam's e-commerce market is valued at $22 billion, making it Southeast Asia's third largest, according to the 2024 e-Economy SEA report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company. 🚀 It is projected to grow by over 19% annually to reach $63 billion by 2030 and surpass Thailand into second place in the region behind Indonesia. 🧮 According to a NielsenIQ survey, 37% of Asia-Pacific consumers did not plan their most recent online purchases, while 47% avoided buying online because they feared making impulse purchases. 💚 The lack of clear criteria for green products and services hinders efforts to promote sustainable practices on e-commerce platforms. https://lnkd.in/g6sMPC4A

Exploring the Sustainability Movement in E-commerce: Eco- Friendly Practices and Consumer Preference🌱 Sustainability is no longer just a moral obligation; it's a savvy business decision, especially for e-commerce ventures. With more and more people caring about the environment, businesses simply cannot ignore the environment and should keep it in mind as they sell things online. As a result, e-commerce is looking very different, whether it's from a sustainability perspective, eco-friendly packaging, delivery that doesn't pollute, or green products. Sustainable packaging trends in Indian e-commerce According to market research reports, the Indian sustainable packaging market was valued at USD 3.5 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 11.1 billion by 2025, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.7%. Businesses are adopting packaging solutions made from seaweed and plants, honeycomb papers and plant fibres and pulp as an alternative to non-recyclable packaging materials. This significantly reduces environmental waste and improves waste management processes. One trend that has emerged in recent years is the use of recyclable and compostable packaging materials, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. E-commerce companies that prioritize sustainability not only meet consumer expectations but also tap into a growing market segment with immense purchasing power. In this era of conscious consumerism, sustainability isn't just a choice—it's a necessity. By embracing eco-friendly practices and aligning with consumer values, e-commerce businesses can thrive in a rapidly evolving marketplace while making a positive impact on the planet. read blog on: https://lnkd.in/gYDj8xCn

OCT 19, 2022【Support for ESG Start-up "PackAge+" to Upgrade Green E-commerce and Logistics in Taiwan】 Every day, through our online purchases, Taiwan uses over 100 million "single-use packaging" annually, generating about 113,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. It would take approximately 1,729 Daan Forest Parks absorbing carbon for a year to offset this amount! As e-commerce develops, these figures become increasingly alarming. What kind of Earth do we want to leave for future generations? PackAge+配客嘉 has developed a “Reusable Ecommerce Packaging” system that can be reused over 30 times. Suppose we are willing to take a few extra steps to return the packaging each time it's delivered (with over 4,000 convenience stores across Taiwan accepting returns). In that case, we can enable the packaging to be reused, reducing cardboard waste and saving trees. Our next generation won't have to see barren forests! Allen (葉德偉) is an exceptional entrepreneur who has assembled a team deeply committed to sustainability. They have managed to integrate various stakeholders along the supply chain, a feat that requires a competent team. This was a decisive factor in our investment decision, and we hope that Taiwan will lead Asia in the green economy, with PackAge+ playing a significant role! E-commerce friends, did you know that the Environmental Protection Administration plans to support eco-friendly packaging in 2023, requiring e-commerce companies to gradually increase their use of environmentally friendly packaging to 15% by 2026? PChome, Shopee, SOGO, Uniqlo, and Carrefour are already adopting this initiative. What are you waiting for? With environmentally conscious consumers on the rise, upgrading to green e-commerce and logistics can enhance your competitive edge in the future.

With environmental concerns at the forefront, businesses are adopting eco-friendly practices to meet consumer demands and reduce their carbon footprint. One significant shift is seen in packaging. E-commerce giants are ditching plastic and opting for biodegradable materials like recycled paper and compostable alternatives. This move not only minimizes waste but also appeals to eco-conscious shoppers looking for sustainable options. Moreover, sustainable sourcing practices are gaining traction. E-commerce platforms are partnering with suppliers committed to ethical production methods, such as fair trade and organic farming. This ensures that products reach consumers with minimal environmental impact and uphold social responsibility standards. Technology plays a crucial role too. Optimizing transportation routes and embracing electric vehicles for delivery reduces emissions associated with shipping. Advanced logistics software further streamlines inventory management, cutting down on waste throughout the supply chain. Consumer preferences are evolving in tandem with these changes. Studies indicate a growing willingness to pay more for eco-friendly products and support brands committed to sustainability. E-commerce businesses that align with these values not only contribute to environmental conservation but also gain a competitive edge in a market increasingly driven by conscious consumerism. In conclusion, sustainability is reshaping e-commerce practices, from packaging to sourcing and logistics. Exploring the Sustainability Movement in E-Commerce: Eco-Friendly Practices and Consumer Preferences Sustainability means doing something in such a way as not to deplete natural resources and to support long-term global ecological balance. It can also be stated as balancing the needs of present without compromising the needs of the future generations to meet theirs. Since, India is 7th largest E-Commerce market in the world which makes this market not only the hub of D2C(Direct-to-Consumer) chain but also the hub of waste generation in the form of plastic wraps, packaging materials, high energy consumption, carbon emission etc. due to which an adoption of 'Sustainability Movement' is seemed to be implemented in the recent years. Now 'Sustainability Movement' in the market led to changes such that companies started adopting environmentally and socially responsible practices such as reducing packaging, utilizing renewable energy, and avoiding high shipping emissions. The above stated change not only benefited the environment but also turned to benefit the E-Commerce businesses in the following ways: 1. Attracted More Customers- More shoppers started choosing sustainability as a metric /parameter for whether or not to support a brand. 2. Saved Money- Running factory and warehouses on renewable energy was cheaper for businesses, which could be more scaled if switched to either solar or wind power. Similarly, usage of electric vehicles to deliver goods helped in fuel cost cutting. 3. Attracted more Employees- 71% of the employees and employment seekers were ready to work at lower salaries for organizations supporting 'Environmental Sustainability'. 4. Tax Reduction- Government of India and many other countries offered tax incentives to businesses switching to more sustainable processes.

Now introduce the e-commerce sustainability movement, a burgeoning movement where companies and customers work together to reduce the environmental impact of online buying. Why Use Green Technology Online? While traditional retail faces its own set of environmental challenges, e-commerce faces particular problems such as:Waste from packaging: Landfills accumulate cardboard boxes, plastic wrap, and those annoying packing peanuts.Delivery emissions: Each "click to buy" results in a vehicle running on fuel, which pollutes the air.High return rates: Unwanted goods are disposed of carelessly and frequently wind up in landfills.Long-Term RemediesEco-friendly business methods that e-commerce companies are adopting include:Minimalist packaging reduces the total size of the package and uses recyclable or biodegradable materials.Carbon-neutral shipping involves funding renewable energy projects to offset delivery-related emissions.Openness and education: disseminating precise details regarding the lifecycles of products and safe disposal techniques. The Influence of Eco-Friendly PurchasesThe sustainable e-commerce movement is fueled mostly by consumer demand. According to studies, more and more consumers are giving eco-friendly practices top priority while making purchases online. Here's how to make sustainable purchases:Make an investigation: Seek out businesses that have definite certifications and pledges to sustainability.Select environmentally friendly products: Give your support to companies that use fair trade methods, organic ingredients, or recycled materials.Accept reusables: Choose goods that come in the least amount of packaging or spend money on reusable substitutes like shopping bags.Consider your purchase before making it: Avoid impulsive buys and concentrate on high-quality, long-lasting products.Creating a Future That Is SustainableBusinesses and customers may work together to make online shopping more environmentally friendly. Everyone can gain from sustainable practices:Diminished influence on the environment: Reduced emissions and garbage production improve the earth's health.Improved reputation of the brand: Consumers who care about the environment are drawn to businesses with robust sustainability programmes.Savings: Businesses can cut expenses by using ethical procedures and effective packaging.Although the e-commerce sustainability movement is still in its infancy, it has great potential to contribute to an environmentally conscious future for online purchasing. Today I have written a blog on Exploring the sustainability movement in E-commerce:Eco friendly practices and consumer prefrences Today, let's dive into the fascinating world of sustainability within e-commerce. As a student navigating through the complex web of online shopping and environmental awareness, I've come across some insightful trends and practices that are shaping the future of how we shop online.First off, let's talk about eco-friendly practices. E-commerce companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of reducing their environmental footprint. From packaging to shipping, there's a growing emphasis on sustainability every step of the way. One major aspect is packaging. As consumers, we're all too familiar with the excessive amount of packaging that often accompanies our online orders. But fear not! Many e-commerce companies are now turning to eco-friendly packaging alternatives such as recycled materials, biodegradable packaging peanuts, and even minimalist packaging designs that reduce waste. Then there's the issue of transportation. The carbon emissions associated with shipping products all around the globe can really add up. That's why some e-commerce giants are investing in greener shipping options like electric delivery vehicles and carbon offset programs to mitigate their environmental impact. But here's the kicker: as much as e-commerce companies are making strides towards sustainability, it ultimately comes down to us, the consumers. Our preferences and purchasing decisions have a powerful influence on driving positive change. So, what are consumers looking for when it comes to eco-friendly e-commerce? Well, it's not just about the product itself anymore. Increasingly, consumers are considering the entire lifecycle of a product, from production to disposal. Transparency is key. We want to know where our products are coming from, how they're made, and what impact they have on the environment. That's why e-commerce companies that prioritize transparency and ethical sourcing are gaining traction among eco-conscious consumers. But it's not just about the environment. Social responsibility also plays a significant role. Consumers are drawn to brands that demonstrate a commitment to fair labor practices, diversity, and community engagement. Ultimately, sustainability in e-commerce is a collaborative effort between companies and consumers alike. As students and future leaders, we have the power to drive positive change through our purchasing decisions and by supporting companies that align with our values. So, the next time you're browsing online for that perfect purchase, take a moment to consider the environmental and social impact of your choices. Together, we can make a difference—one eco-friendly click at a time.
