As a frontend Engineer, Identifying potential employers can be challenging. Here is my framework that may help you to guide your evaluation process. Here are key parameters to consider: Product Impact: How crucial is the frontend to their success? Is it user-facing (think Figma, Google Docs, or OTT platforms), or internal-facing (dashboards)? Tech Stack: Are they on the cutting edge, or is there a clear migration plan? Team Structure: Do frontend and backend engineers work together, or are they siloed? Interview Process: Is there a dedicated frontend interview process, or is it backend-heavy? Compensation: Do frontend engineers get compensated competitively (compared to backend/full-stack roles)? Open Source: Does the company contribute to open-source projects? (Bonus points if they have projects relevant to your interests!) Design: Are their products visually appealing? I've been doing it through referrals. I learned a great deal from this experience and I'll like to share a little insights with you next week. I would need to prepare a detailed carousel. But a strong point is this: ↳ Hiring is not about you! It's about the company and the role. This mindset shift can change the experience for you. Anyone hiring has a pain point they're trying to solve. If you can solve that pain, you're the perfect fit. It's not just about your skills and experience, it's way beyond that. So when next you want to apply, ask yourself what pain they're facing and how you can solve it. Frontend Development Isn't Real Engineering? If I had a dollar for every time I've heard the claim that frontend development isn't "real" engineering, I'd have quite a fortune by now. I'll admit, when I started my career in tech, I stood firmly on the opposing side of this argument, but here’s what I've learnt: The work of a frontend developer extends beyond translation of Figma designs into code. There’s much more to it, from ensuring seamless user experiences to tackling challenges like unit testing, browser compatibility, and performance optimization. Frontend development demands a diverse skill set not limited to paying close attention to detail. 🚀 However, I do see how it rubs you off from understanding the core concepts of software engineering extensively. But it's very "real"; every aspect of software development comes with its own challenges. What truly matters is the dedication, passion, and problem-solving skills that developers bring to the table, regardless of their chosen specialty. So, are FE developers any less than their counterparts in other fields? Absolutely not. Recognizing the need for a more streamlined approach, I'm implementing filtered subcategories based on the selected category. 🔍 Current Challenge: Currently, when creating a new product, users are presented with an unfiltered list of subcategories to choose from. This can lead to a cumbersome experience, especially when navigating through numerous options unrelated to the chosen category. ✨ Proposed Solution: To address this challenge, I'm implementing a refined category-subcategory relationship. Now, when users select a category during product creation, they will only see subcategories that are directly related to that category. This enhancement not only simplifies the selection process but also ensures relevance and accuracy. Here are some key takeaways on application state design: ### 🗂 Application State Components: 1. **App Config**: User preferences such as theme, locale, font size, and accessibility settings. 2. **UI Elements State**: State of UI components like selected controls, text formatting, and other configurations. 3. **Server Data**: Persistent data like messages and posts that the application needs to manage. ### 🔑 General Principles: 1. **Minimize Access Cost**: Optimize the structure to reduce the time and resources needed to access data. 2. **Minimize Search Cost**: Ensure that searching within the application state is efficient. 3. **Minimize RAM Usage**: Efficiently manage memory usage to ensure smooth performance. ### 💡 Best Practices: - **Data Normalization**: Break down complex data into simpler, atomic components with clear primary keys to enhance performance and maintainability. - **Optimized Access Performance**: Structure your state to facilitate quick and efficient data retrieval. - **High Developer Readability and Maintenance**: we can use Database Normalization from Non-NF to 3NF ### 📌 Summary: 1. **Know your scale** - Optimize accordingly. 2. **Always start with how you structure your data**. 3. **Use Normal forms to optimize access cost**. 4. **Use Indexes if in-app search is required**. 5. **Offload data to hard-drive when needed**. 6. **Pick a suitable storage**.
