This past week, Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories had the pleasure of hosting students from Native Nations Nursing, Helpers, and Healers Summit as part of the Ignite program, in collaboration with Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin! 🏥🔬 These future leaders had the opportunity to visit various departments within our lab, while participating in simulated, interactive lab exercises as they learned about potential careers in pathology, medical technology, laboratory science and more. It's important for us to show the next generation of healthcare leaders how essential our team's support is for patient care, and we hope we’ve inspired them! #STEMeducation #FutureLeaders #HealthcareCareers #IgniteProgram #Froedtert #MCW

While residency was a steep learning curve for my co-residents and I, the particulars of the slope were unique to each of us. The American Board of Surgeons recently implemented Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), a new tool that uses micro assessments and frequent real-time feedback. EPAS will allow residency programs to individualize exposure to specific clinical scenarios, rotations or procedures based on resident needs and may even tailor the length of training to the individual. EPAs correlate strongly with ACGME milestones, including communication competencies, which can be effective in navigating burnout and departmental/organizational policies required for cultural change. What do you think about using EPAs during training and its potential effect on burnout for future physicians? #healthcare #healthcareleadership #physicianburnout

For former FACTS elective student Dr. Margaret Paules, medical school education in FABMs was minimal. Her professors described these methods as the “you are gonna get pregnant method.” The FABM user experience reflects this knowledge gap. As part of the elective, Dr. Paules interviewed a woman who has used 4 different natural methods of family planning: Billings, Creighton, Marquette and now Sympto-Thermal. Over the years, she encountered several medical professionals who were not supportive of her choice to use FABMs for family planning. This interview highlights the importance of educating physicians in the various FABMs to provide women with accurate information. Check out the FACTS shared decision-making tool that clinicians can use to aid patients in selecting an effective FABM!
