An interesting read for those with a few minutes to spare. I can't imagine there being too many people who would disagree with the notion that our tax system could do with fine tuning rather than being used as a political tool (to steal a line from the article)!

Extract from my latest AJ Column: “As a nation, could 4 July be the day we select a government strong enough to adopt policies so forward-thinking they are seen as radical? I hope so because that is what we need.” https://lnkd.in/dP8JJKmg

Delighted to see movement on money from Scottish Government, and a renewed commitment to the work of the creative sector following this debacle last week. Creative Scotland now have a mammoth task, a monster of their own making, created by targeting and closing the Open Fund for Individuals… 😢 …an assessment workload from six months-worth of applications being submitted at once… 😩…many of which will have been rushed over the line because of an unexpected and short notice deadline, and not refined to the standard that the applicants would want… 😬…which would effectively soak up the re-introduced funds, if existing assessment processes are applied… 🧐…while also allowing for re-opening of the fund to new applications. Much like the similar debacle co-occurring over the last week with UK Innovate’s scheme for female founders, this shines a light on how the systems and processes developed to support specific activity are - in fact - not fit for Purpose. So how can we change things?

Imagine this: You are the CEO of a major Canadian bank. 2 of your top officials resign on the day the company is supposed to release it’s earnings report….. one of those people is the Chief Operating Officer, your 2nd in command. You then sit in your office all day and hide. Not addressing the earnings report yourself, or even addressing what is happening at the company. How would you feel being a shareholder in that institution? Probably not very good. Well….. we are all shareholders in this Country. We get taxed everywhere we look and we have a leader who won’t even come out and explain what is happening in VERY important positions, let alone comment on the Fall Economic Statement - basically the “earnings report” for our Country (which was extremely negative, in my view). I think it’s time for a change. #FES #falleconomicstatement #budgetdeficit #cdnecon #cdnpoli #canadianbusiness #pmo #financeminister

The size of the government is directly related to its efficiency. The bigger, the less efficient; the smaller, the more efficient.
