Have you ever had a job that leaves your friends asking, “Wait, you did what?” Well, back in 2012, I was THE person to call if you wanted to throw an in-home wine tasting party — yup, wine flights in living rooms, corks popping in kitchens, and a mini “sommelier” in me (that I never knew existed). What started as an adventure in pours, sips, and recommendations of Rosé, Merlots, or blends quickly became a crash course in people skills, sales finesse, and a front-row seat to human nature. Turns out, you learn a lot when you’re working to help people uncover their “wine personality,” while simultaneously trying to convince them to buy a wine delivery subscription. The experience was fun and the selling wasn’t too tough — especially once your audience had a few glasses! That unexpected role taught me to adapt, connect, and always have a backup plan (or extra bottle) for the unexpected. And funny enough, it laid the groundwork for my career today at FlexTal, where I help companies find that perfect talent blend (minus the corkscrew). Moral of the story? We took a big, scary bet and it paid off… Rootine has built an incredible community and a fast-growing brand, but as an internal team we are still relatively small (but mighty). The challenge we faced: ExpoWest is massive and we knew we wanted to send enough people to make a great impression. So we got creative. We put together a team with folks from every department - sales, design, engineering, CX, and marketing. As of Feb 26th, only a few of us knew the ins and outs of the CPG / retail industry and all the science behind our formulations. Expo West started 2 weeks later. ⚠️ I knew this had the potential to be a disaster. We have heard horror stories of reps from Target, Whole Foods Market, UNFI etc. asking basic questions about product, distribution, and more and teams having no idea how to answer. And big buyers loosing interest in that brand for years to come. But, we made the bet anyways. I trusted the team and I was confident that I could prepare them. We created study guides and had live mock Expo role playing, cold calling and some fun pop quizzes. And it worked! 🎉 Tons of interest, great conversations with buyers and we were the first winner of the KeHE Distributors Trendfinder event at Expo West 2024 (we’ll be an official supplier on their platform soon!). Beyond all of Rootine’s success at ExpoWest, our entire team now knows our products, science, and key messages like the back of their hand. That means engineers have more insight into how we market, marketers have more insight into ops and distribution, and so on. This knowledge sharing will pay dividends over the months to come.
