On the power of “Yes” and the magic of community collaboration - a throwback to a day that defines innovation and resilience.
Ten years ago, as dawn broke and I made my way back from a workshop I had led in Eagle Pass, and while on the road a call from Bastrop—where I had the honor of working at the time—changed the course of my day and, in many ways, my approach to opportunities.
I remember this day because It was International Happiness Day, and a friend a and Bastrop residnet called with an idea: “Could we shoot a video set to the tune of “Happy,” a song that was trending at the time to celebrate International Happiness Day?”
Honestly, I thought, “It’s 7 in the morning. I’m driving a rented Prius four hours from Bastrop, and you want to shoot, produce, and post a video today?”
So, naturally, I said l, “Yes,” because that’s what Super Dave Quinn would do.
The logistics seemed daunting. Me, miles away driving in a rented Prius, with the day already in full swing. But the essence of innovation isn’t in the ‘how’ but the ‘yes.’
“Yes,” I found myself saying. Yes to the unpredictable, yes to the seemingly impossible, because that’s what we do.
The video below is more than a memory. It’s a reminder of the power in embracing opportunities, no matter how unexpected.
It wasn’t about the how; it was about the will. And as the day unfolded, so did the path to making it happen, guided by a community’s heart and hustle.
This experience taught me countless lessons, but the most profound was the incredible feats we can achieve when we foster a culture of yes. It’s about more than just agreeing; it’s about opening doors to possibilities, about communities and individuals coming together to turn a vision into reality.
This video, crafted in a single day, stands as a vibrant reminder of what’s possible when we unite in creativity and purpose.
As you watch, I hope you’re reminded of the power within you to embrace opportunities, lead with optimism, and build something meaningful together. Let’s carry this spirit of possibility into every challenge, every project, every day.
Here’s to saying “Yes” - to opportunities, to community, and to making the impossible possible. Watch to the end to see all the folks who said Yes and helped make it happen.
Bonus points: drop a comment on the investment you think it took to produce this.

Part of what makes community-driven work meaningful is the people who we have the privilege to work with. On Friday, June 28th, we celebrated a big milestone – 2 years of collaboration, grassroots community projects, and a growing network of partners across North Dakota and Minnesota. Our friends over at the Frazee-Vergas Forum captured the spirit of the afternoon and our awe in this moment of growth: https://lnkd.in/e9VjvVuV
We couldn’t have done this without an amazing team, one that keeps expanding! This month, we welcome four new members to the Creating Community Consulting Family, in a new space in downtown Frazee: Jamie Crabtree, Heather Ware Nelson, Shelly Blauert, and Amy Kilde. They join Karen Dowing and Sophia Strand, alongside Karen Pifher in the amazing community work happening throughout Becker County!
Please stop by the office to say hello if you find yourself in the area (especially on a Friday from 2:30-5:30pm) and stay tuned as we share more about our team’s focus areas of work with us this summer and beyond!

Another reason to join NASW: https://lnkd.in/gseDFBDd
It was my honor and privilege to be able to attend the National Association of Social Workers' national conference in Washington, D.C. this past week, and to present, with Executive Director Christopher McLaughlin and President Julie Schirmer, information about "How to Energize Your Board of Directors: A focus on Advocacy, Collaboration, and Leadership."
Together we worked with many kinds of Boards, including an equestrian service provider for mental health, other NASW Boards, and financial boards, to name a few. The dialogue was engaging, and we all learned from each other. Some key takeaways included knowledge about who your board represents, and what they care about as beginning steps toward effectiveness.
We utilized information from High Performance Boards, by Didier Cossin, and Successful Community Leadership and Organization, by John E. Tropman, along with other resources, to share information about the
Four pillars of high-performance boards:
People
Information and architecture
Structure and processes, and
Group dynamics
as a gateway to group sessions which benefited each of us in the room. Together, we shared stories of successes, as well as areas for growth.
Through this process, I was reminded - yet again- that we are stronger together and fare better when we learn from one another.
Interesting article by William Chamberlain around working in a place making context and our relationship with communities - whilst London has a very different context to the regions there is always principles that remain at heart of creativity and culture in the heart of our villages , towns and cities - worth a read 👇🏽👇🏽

Today, us Scots celebrate St. Andrew’s Day, I’m reflecting on the incredible legacy of Scotland—a small country with a massive impact on the world.
From our rolling hills to our lochs, our landscapes are breathtaking, but for me it’s the sheer ingenuity of our people that truly defines us.
Scotland has always been a land of ideas.
🏴 Adam Smith, the father of economics, taught the world about the invisible hand of the market—but also the importance of fairness and morality.
🏴 James Watt revolutionised the Industrial Age with the steam engine, reshaping how the world worked and lived.
🏴 Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone, changing how we connect across the world.
These are just some of the countless Scots whose innovations have shaped humanity. It’s a legacy of bold thinking, unrelenting curiosity, and a deep drive to improve the world.
I like to think I emulate that spirit!!
St. Andrew’s Day reminds us of these values: humility, collaboration, and resilience in the face of challenges. As a proud Scot, I carry these values with me every day. Our history isn’t just something to look back on—it’s a foundation for what we can build in the future.
Let’s celebrate Scotland not only for what it has achieved, but for what it continues to inspire.
What innovation or moment in Scottish history inspires you most?
PS I will from Monday begin publishing the analysis from my polls on industry reforms.
