May 16th is GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day) Foundation. This day is meant to increase awareness of how important accessibility is in everyday life for all of us. It is important to become literate in accessibility. This means understanding disability and inclusive design. Inclusive design is defined as “The belief and methodology of creating buildings, products, or environments to make them accessible to all people, regardless of age, disability, or other factors.” (source: digital.gov) As a health care provider and occupational therapist accessibility for our clients is of significance and impacts quality of life not just from the built community but also from the digital platforms we use as well as the printed material commonly provided our clients at the time of discharge from our services. There are numerous resources that provide guidance on accessibility. Below is one that everyone needs to watch. Presented in a kind and visual way to illustrate how to interact with others in places of work and public spaces. #GAAD #Accessibility #digitalaccessibility #occupationaltherapy #inculsivedesign #userexperience #plainlanguage #qualityoflife Teaching disability sensitivity (3:40 min) > https://lnkd.in/eA4KfRYQ User Experience – TED Talk: It's not fair having 12 pairs of legs with Aimee Mullins (10 min) > https://lnkd.in/eqC44Pqu

Sense's college service helps disabled people develop the skills they need to find long-term, meaningful work. This great film from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) highlights this and shows how assistive tech is making a difference.
Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms visited Sense College Loughborough to see how they are helping disabled people gain access to the workplace through the use of modern assistive technology. Joined-up employment support and social security will be at the heart of our plan to spread opportunity and prosperity to everyone, wherever they live.

On this day, International Day of People with Disabilities, I wanted to highlight how inclusion of people with disabilities should be thought of at all times. My focus is usually in health, education and employment. However, there are other areas we must also attend to...planning for emergencies is one of them! Congratulations (and my gratitude) to Michelle Villeneuve and team for the fantastic 'Disability Inclusive Emergency Management' toolkit which gives us clear guidance.
