I’m visiting Christmas markets in Holt, Norfolk today. I needed to pick up a supply of medication I’d accidentally left at home, and had that problem solved in a surprisingly short time thanks to an innovation available to NH England patients. So, as I stand outside a deli with a dog leash in one hand, and bag of pressies in the other, I turned to ChatGPT and my Meta glasses to dictate this short post…. “During my clinical career as an out-of-hours doctor, I spent many evenings and weekends providing urgent and unscheduled primary care. A common issue was patients running out of medication—often unexpectedly or due to prescription delays. On Saturday mornings, up to a third of our calls were for repeat prescriptions, adding pressure to the system and making it harder for us to focus on more urgent cases. Back then, emergency prescription services were available but not consistently offered. Today, however, I discovered the NHS 111 emergency prescription service, which efficiently addresses this issue through an online process. If you’re in the England and need a non-controlled medication, you can request it electronically to a local pharmacy for dispensing. Problem solved in a stroke! This service is a prime example of how simple solutions can alleviate significant burdens for both clinicians and patients. Check out the link to see how this innovative approach can help you when you’re in a tight spot. https://lnkd.in/eEYRGPSG Nb: this is routine repeat meds only by the look of things, and doesn’t cover short course antibiotics and the like. For that, you have NHS 111 itself.

Cleaning out your medicine cabinet? 1. Safely dispose of expired, unwanted, or unneeded medications 2. Remove labels with personal information 3. Take to nearby pharmacy or hospital with rx takeback program 4. Secure your remaining medications in a locking medicine box Avoid tossing bottles with your personal information on them, or throwing bottles full of medications into the trash. Avoid flushing prescription medications down the toilet - they can end up in the local supply of drinking water, in lakes, rivers, and oceans. Make #medicationsafety a priority for 2025.
