The date Thursday 14th November 2024 will go down as an important day in New Zealand's history. The Treaty Principles Bill 2024 (TPB) passed it's first reading in the House of Parliament. A bill that seeks to clarify the constitutonal interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document. A similar previous law passed in 1975 also instructed the government how to interpret and enact the Treaty however since then the interpretation has changed and evolved through case law. It is important for all government departments and laws to have a consistent interpretation of the Treaty for the proper functioning of society. This is just a snippet of what we do with Women and the Digital Economy in Tanzania. #WanawakeNaDijitali is a linking platform to in demand digital skills, opportunities in the digital economy, digital solutions, and supporting with onboarding of women entrepreneurs onto e-commerce platforms. Our work is convening, facilitating, capacitating, amplifying and supporting Women and meaningful use of Technolocy. In addition to the #WanawakeNaDijitali Forum and Marketplace, we also have The Tanzania Women and Technology Conference held every year during women’s history month. This is the high level conversation one would aspire to have on policy, ecosystem and everything Women and Technology from opportunities, to challenges and areas for partnerships and resource mobilization. Launched in 2023 with support from the Ministry of ICT, we are honoured to have held two very successful conferences and very much look forward to the 2025 edition as we get ready to release another documentary on the overview of Women and Technology in Tanzania, drawing on progress made since we released our first documentary in 2023. We were then challenged to do more to support Women led tech/digital solutions, and so we launched the SheTech Incubator and Accelerator Program(and oh my acceleration has truly been a challenge, will write about this one 😩) but yeeeey, we learn and we move and now we have our second co-hort incubating more than 10 young women aged 21-27. We are also cognizant of how gender norms and societal beliefs and practices have intentionally and unintentionally excluded young girls from even dreaming about the digital world, so together with the Tanzania Institute of Education, we have launched digital skills clubs at primary and secondary schools across Tanzania. National roll out will be this January 2025 - talk about ‘catching them early’. And of course keeping and supporting women to stay safe online remains our priority, and we continue to develop mechanisms and improve our reporting helpline infrastructure for OGBV, TFGBV and Psychosocial Safety. It really has become a dilemma in either we need to tell and do marketing about places or not!? Many parts we were so eager to promote 10 years ago, have become big tourist destinations today. Locals and also us, are making more money from the business. The governments seems happy and excited, even Albanian political parties don't argue when it comes to developing Albania through tourism. But hey, can anyone tell when and how to stop promoting travel destinations while local people are so excited and happy about people finally coming to visit them. It is important financially for them, it helps them get in touch with the rest of the World as well. It makes their chlidren plan to come back and build a future at home! It gives them hope and dignity! Or at least this is what it looks like! On the other side it seems to harm local culture, nature and traditions. It is obvious that this is to an extent or another, impossible to avoid! Anyone that knows the solution to this dilemma!? Cannot believe we are facing this in an Albania that seemed to be forgotten from the rest of the World until more or less 5 years ago!!! What a (great and terrible) problem to have hm!? Alda B.
