Why Did Vinesh Phogat Weighed In over the 100 gram limit? In some heartbreaking news, Vinesh Phogat, India's Olympic hopeful has been disqualified from the Olympics for weighing in with more than the permissible 100 grams limit. In sports with weighted categories, it is a common practice for athlete to have weight fluctuations of between 4-5 kgs between the time of weighing in and the time of competition. No athlete fights or competes at the exact weight of the category but their medical teams generally have expert guidance in how to safely manage this fluctuation. This is why even though this practice is so common, disqualification on the basis of weight is so rare. So what could have happened in Paris? I was in Paris yesterday and it was scorching hot. The Paris Olympics is said to be a green Olympics with no air-conditioning in the village and some venues. This reality is making it extremely difficult for athletes to keep cool and prepare adequately. My working theory is that in an effort to keep cool during the day but warm up adequately for her bout, her hydration consumption increased significantly but unknowingly. This is why despite there best efforts, they struggled to get that weight off. It is important to understand that athletes are masters of managing their food consumption especially during competition. For this to have happened, an unknown variable had to have been introduced into the mix, after all, she was 2kg's over weight. Dehydration makes the body retain water so when external conditions are forcing dehydration, the body starts to hold onto more water. It is definitely a sad day for Indian Olympics and my heart goes out to Vinesh. She is a true champion - both on and off the field. Debates around athletes’ eligibility and the effectiveness of anti-doping strategies highlight the ongoing challenges and ethical dilemmas posed by performance-enhancing drug use.
