Rakshabandhan is a festival where a sister ties a sacred thread on her brother's wrist, symbolizing a bond of protection. The word "Rakshabandhan" merges "Raksha" (protection) with "Bandhan" (bond). But if protection is the goal, why must it come with a binding? Can Raksha not exist without a Bandhan? Let’s rethink this tradition—removing the invisible constraints placed on our sisters so they can fly freely. Shouldn’t they be empowered to protect themselves? I wonder, do they truly need our protection, or is this bond a subtle way to limit their freedom under the guise of care? Are they unaware of the invisible shackles we impose, preventing them from realizing their full potential? If we have been promising to protect our sisters for decades, then why are they still vulnerable, fearful on the streets, in buses, trains, schools, hospitals, sports, and beyond? If these threats persist, perhaps it’s time for them to stop expecting protection from us. Instead, they must learn to protect themselves. Let’s break these bonds and allow our sisters to soar on their own terms, fully capable of their own defense.
