It was fantastic to head up to the beautiful northern rivers earlier this month for the National Circus Festival with our pals Spaghetti Circus. It was a lovely week of circus training, performance and connection, with many meals shared with our circus peers and new friends. Our trainers Katy, Kelsea, Em and Sim worked hard up-skilling in the training week for some professional development, along with our member Bella. Hanne and Steph from the office also joined to get some sun (and rain!) and connect with our sector colleagues and friends. Until next time! “Our research shows that for every dollar invested for a child in a circus training program, seven dollars are potentially saved in their future mental health costs,” said lead researcher Dr Richard McGrath. Bridges has long been an advocate for the arts as a means of providing accessible wellbeing programs and offering communities an opportunity to share stories that are important to them. Bridges offers support to young people and families through their Family Mental Health Support Service with offices in Gayndah and Kingaroy and outreach across the Burnett region. Feedback from our team working in the Burnett was that young people needed something in the school holidays to engage them socially and physically. We approached Flipside Circus, Queensland’s largest youth focused arts organisation, who offer circus training programs across Queensland. So why is a mental health service organisation supporting a circus workshop program to tour the region you might ask? Circus training and performing is a fantastic way of maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. There is a wealth of academic and scientific research that has been conducted in Australia and internationally that demonstrates the wellbeing benefits of participating in circus. Circus skills includes a variety of acrobatics (including tumbling, balancing and trampoline), juggling, aerials (such as trapeze, silks and lyra) and hoops as experienced in the recent Flipside Circus workshops. Research conducted by the University of South Australia in 2019, analysing the experiences of 55 participants in a children’s (aged 8-14 years) circus school program, demonstrated that there were significant improvements in the young people’s mental wellbeing; particularly stress relief, self-esteem, confidence and socialisation. The study showed that there is a quantifiable social return from circus. Why did a circus act make me think of working with clients and partners? I took my littlest niece to the Moscow Family Circus a few weeks ago and this noisy wheel of potential death was one of the featured acts. I was the one peeking through my fingers as the riders revved and whizzed around. But what struck me was the absolute trust, skill and confidence between the team members, and the escalation of the act when they were good and ready. It was the teamwork I admired, and it made me think of the ways we like to work with clients and partners at ResilientCo. 🔸Bringing our experience 🔸Leading where we need to 🔸Acting as extra arms and legs where we have to 🔸Building capacity where we can We’re also flexible, and know that sometimes, the organisations we work with need to walk before they run. Despite their speciality acts, everyone wore multiple hats in the circus and dug in to help their colleagues to get a good audience-focussed result. See how I connected it? Plus it’s just a really cool video (sound on) 😊 #TeamWork #Strategy

"You can always run away and join the circus." 🎪 🤡 Don't know what kind of job you want? Join the circus. Want to travel and have exciting adventures? Join the circus. Want to have fun all day? Join the circus. This is what my mother would suggest when I'd say "I don't know what to do with my life." After a handful of dead end jobs, touchy feely bosses, and not enough money to cover rent, I'd complain. She'd say, "You can always run away and join the circus." We'd laugh, and come up with some other kind of strategy. One day, I thought, "The circus might be fun." Maybe I'll meet a cute cowboy. Maybe I'll learn how to do acrobatics. Maybe I'll get to ride on an elephant, or tame a lion, or be the ringleader. The 'bearded lady' option wouldn't come into play until years later (ladies, you know what I am talking about.) But my irrational fear of clowns, inability to walk over grass without tripping, and my aversion to the smell of horse sh*t always led me back to a more traditional path. I don't know though....I think I may have missed out on a good opportunity. Can you imagine the stories I'd get to tell?? The lesson? Sometimes, the wildest opportunities—the ones that seem completely out of left field—are the ones that lead to the most fun, growth, and adventure. So, if a chance to "join the circus" comes your way, don’t be afraid to take it. You might just end up with the best stories, a new skill set, and a life that’s anything but ordinary. Turns out, looking for a job these days is like a circus anyways....so if you are looking for a job, you ended up in the 'circus' anyway. #resumewriting #jobsearch #itsacircusoutthere #jointhecircus

It’s Your Circus 🎪 Sometimes our lives can feel like we are ringmasters of a three ring circus that might seem to be getting a bit wild. Ring 1 is the work ring, necessary but can be disruptive to the rest of the circus. Ring 2 is the one where all of our other daily activities perform, which sometimes might look like a bunch of clown cars out of control. Ring 3 is where personal time and self care take place but often overlooked because it is happening overhead, like a tightrope walker. This is the act that requires great balancing skill and sometimes without a net. So how can we become better ringmasters? 🎪 schedule time for each ring and dedicate time for each performance. 🎪 don’t add any more acts unless you have the capacity for the extra work. 🎪 ask for help, sometimes it might be the clowns that can be of service. 🎪 don’t forget to take care of the tightrope walker and ringmaster, self care and family are your safety net. As the ringmaster it’s up to you to organize your circus so that you too are having fun. #itsyourcircus #activatedlife #healthandwellness #selfcare #livealohalivewell #underafullmoonandaguidingstar #alakaiassociates

#The circus life# The roar of the crowd faded as the trapeze artist stuck the landing, a flawless dismount after a heart-stopping routine. Around me, applause thundered, but I sat with a hand nonchalantly resting on my knee. "Another day, another perfect trick," I thought, "Why clap? They're getting paid to do that." That's when Nik, a little firecracker of a kid beside me, nudged me. "They work really hard to do that, you know," he said, his eyes wide with awe. "Don't you think a clap or two would be nice?" His words struck a chord. Here I was, watching these performers take death-defying leaps and mind-bending contortions, and I hadn't even offered a courtesy clap. It felt a bit like how I treated my own work. I put in the hours, tackled challenges, yet rarely received a pat on the back from the boss. Suddenly, the circus wasn't just about juggling clowns and daring acrobats. It became a mirror reflecting my own indifference. If I craved appreciation for my efforts, shouldn't I extend the same courtesy to others? The next act, a dazzling display of horseback riding, had me clapping like a maniac. It wasn't just about the performance; it was a silent apology to the performers before, and a promise to myself – to acknowledge the effort behind everything, big or small. Because just like the thunderous applause that erupted after the horseback riding, a little appreciation can go a long way, both for the receiver and the giver. #AppreciationPost #ThankYou #HardWorkPaysOff #KindnessMatters #MakingADifference

Vacation Vibes and Marine Insights 🌊🚢 Just back from a Color Line trip from Oslo to Kiel. Turns out that an Hs of 2.8m and Tp of 7 seconds is enough to stop dancers from performing on stage 😅💃 Unlike other marine operations I however doubt that they perform heading changes in order to reduce vessel motion and optimize operability of dancing activities 🫨 🌪️✨#MarineOperations #VacationInsights #MarineEngineering

Is circus leading an education revolution? Well, not quite. A slow evolution maybe. Flying Fruit Fly Circus has placed creativity right at the heart of our learning experience for decades... but when will the rest of Australia wake up? Creative and critical thinking helps young people make wise decisions and problem-solve effectively. In our technology-driven world, these skills are essential and in high demand from every industry. Employment in the creative economy is growing at a higher rate than the rest of the workforce. This is a significant sector with multiple tertiary education and career pathways, so why do schools (and governments) still not take it seriously? The pipeline for a thriving creative economy begins at school, so we do need an education revolution. “It’s been the making of him,” Samantha says of her son Chot, a student at the circus. “He’s gone from being a child who had difficulty going to school and didn’t want to leave my side to now, where he can’t wait to get there.” Don't blame the kids for disengaging with school, blame the grown-ups. There is a better way, just ask Samantha and Chot (pictured below on stage at Sydney Opera House). Thanks to The Age for today's article highlighting our our academic arm, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus School, an impactful partnership with the Department of Education Victoria, that ensures we can provide valuable in-school training and incredible performance and touring opportunities : https://lnkd.in/gNKyVgFP Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts | Creative Victoria | Create NSW | Creative Australia | Wodonga Council | AlburyCity
