🎵 "I'm leaving, on a jet plane. 🎵 Today it's wheels up for my first trip to Africa for the Global Farmer Network African Leadership Summit. As the world is growing hungrier, Africa's agricultural sector is showing immense potential to not only feed the continent's growing population but also to be a driver for global food security.🌱 And there is more: implementing improved agricultural practices could sequester up to 23% of global carbon emissions by 2050. Agriculture is also the backbone of employment in many African countries, accounting for 60% of jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. Strategic investments in this sector could elevate millions from poverty, with a potential $300 billion revenue boost by 2030 from a mere 50% increase inagricultural yields. The The Telegraph published an article about the need for a new international consensus, a shared vision that respects African priorities and sovereignty while aligning with global environmental and food security goals. 🌍🤝

He explained how OCP Africa is working to transform agriculture on the continent, emphasizing the importance of agro-industrial companies in driving sustainable farming practices and advancing food security in Africa.

"Candy makers Mars and Lindt make millions off of their m&m’s and Lindor chocolate…made with cocoa harvested by child labour. A new EU law puts these candy giants on the spot – but are the chocoloate producers already looking for excuses and loopholes? Both the US and Swiss chocolate giants say fighting child labour is their top priority, but recent reports connect cocoa from multiple plantations using child labour to their supply chains. The EU’s new due diligence law requires corporations to eliminate child and slave labour in supply chains for things like cocoa — it's a huge chance for change, but only if we pressure Lindt and Mars to act and not evade." #Childlabor in #cocoa farming, particularly in West Africa, is a major issue involving human rights violations, economic exploitation, and significant health and safety risks. Children working in this sector endure long hours, hazardous conditions, and exposure to harmful chemicals, which lead to injuries and chronic health problems. This labor deprives children of education, perpetuating poverty and limiting future opportunities. Socially and psychologically, these children face isolation and trauma. Weak enforcement of labor laws and complex supply chains further exacerbate the problem. Ethical concerns for consumers and companies have prompted initiatives to improve labor standards, provide education, and support farming communities. Certification programs like Fairtrade-mærket Danmark and Rainforest Alliance strive to ensure ethically sourced cocoa. Despite these efforts, addressing child labor requires continued commitment and collaboration across all levels of the supply chain to ensure sustainable and ethical cocoa production, improving the lives of those in cocoa-growing regions. By 2050, Africa's population is projected to reach 2.5 billion, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity to transform its agricultural landscape into a global powerhouse for #foodsecurity. 🌍 Investing in African agriculture is an investment in the future, aligning with 13 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, despite a shared political vision for African agriculture, global investment lags behind. African countries have committed to allocating at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program, but the follow-through is lacking. Read in this The Telegraph article why the development of African agriculture is not just an African agenda, but a global one. 🌱

In a world where agriculture (farm ownership) is conventionally for men, and women are only known to work as laborers in the farm, and do not own farm lands, in Africa especially. At U-Farm Africa, inclusivity is one of our goals, where every hand, regardless of gender, age, or physical ability, contributes to agricultural success. We are committed to achieving this goal, and working hard to provide a welcoming, safe, and clean atmosphere that encourages everyone to get involved in agriculture.
