As the saying goes, “A rising tide lifts ALL boats!” I want to celebrate Taraji P Henson’s accolade of being one of Time magazine’s 2024 Women of the Year! Taraji, with all her charisma and talent, has opened up about the battles she's faced, from fighting for fair pay to the disrespect that comes with being a Black woman in the spotlight. Despite being a powerhouse in Hollywood, her struggle for equality is something that resonates with so many women I work with. It's frustrating to see someone of her caliber still having to justify her worth. Her recent emotional interview highlights the persistent pay gap that plagues not only the entertainment industry but also the wider professional realm. With Black women earning significantly less than their white male counterparts, it's a stark reminder of the inequalities embedded within our society. Taraji's experience, despite nearly three decades of acclaimed work, including an Oscar nomination and four Emmy nods, encapsulates the broader struggle for fair compensation and respect that Black women face across all sectors. As a leadership coach for women, I see brilliant women undervalued every day, and Taraji’s experience really brings home the urgency of this issue. From advocating for mental health to starting her own ventures to create opportunities for others, Taraji is taking action in ways that inspire all of us. It's a reminder of the power of using our voices and platforms to spark change. What strikes me most is Taraji's determination to not just fight for her place, but to make sure the door stays open for those coming after her. It’s a powerful message for all of us, especially those of us working to lift women in their careers. It’s not just about one of us making it; it’s about making sure we all do. One thing I love about cozy mysteries? Most of them feature women as the main characters–and they are the detectives, the masterminds and the heroes of their own narratives. As we enter Women’s History Month, I love to think about the women voices who have made literature, and especially the mystery genre, what it is today. And about the other women who had their voices muted or obscured by the prevailing narratives of their time. In the work I do, I love to watch more women take ownership of their creativity and their self-expression. Women, in particular, often face unique challenges in finding their voices and asserting their stories in a world that can be indifferent or even hostile to their perspectives. But through mentorship and guidance, I see them reclaiming their narratives, embracing their creativity and creating their own paths with confidence and purpose. This month–and all months–we must celebrate the achievements of the women who have paved the way for us but also commit ourselves to amplifying the voices of those whose stories have yet to be told. We need to recognize that every woman contributes to our collective human experience. Let’s celebrate resilient, creative, empowered women on ALL the days. 💪

My sister said “Most of us don’t hate our jobs we hate being overworked, underpaid and a failing system”. To add: the perpetual cycle of an anarchic nature of corporate culture. Corporate pained me, it broke me, it broke my family structure, it took a lot from me. To all women in my Industry: nature us, believe in us, stand for us, stand with us. We are not your competition. The politics and economics of today won’t be solved by side line events and gatherings but by your product. Your product being the young women looking up to you, your legacy and what you stand for. Know talent, move with talent, preserve talent, grow talent.

We juggle careers, families, communities – all while navigating a society that doesn't always reflect our unique experiences. Have you ever wondered why you arent getting many or any women signing up to your product? I recently had a phone call with a founder who runs a platform for artists to get education and resources on a particular skill set in the music industry. He said he really struggles to get sign ups from female artists and he didn’t understand why. He said there was nothing about the programme that excluded women and they made a conscious effort to bring in female speakers. As far as he was concerned it wasn’t his fault and not really something he could do anything about. I went on his website for 10 seconds and instantly saw the issue. It’s not enough that you don’t exclude diverse people from your product/company/programme. You have to actively think about why they aren’t joining and do something about it. The biggest problem I see is companies don’t meet diverse people where they live, where they hang out, where they spend time. On the flip side, last year I went to a female founders event. Most women at this event were white but there was also around 10 black women in attendance. When I spoke to those women every single one said that they were there because they found out about the event through The Stack World. That was a powerful moment for me. The Stack World, a community built by a black woman, is a space where other black female founders feel included. They found out about this event through that platform and so therefore knew that they would be included at the event. This is a massive lesson for businesses. You have to go out and seek diversity. You need to make people feel included and valued. Go out into the communities. Seek them out. Be of service to them. If you don’t know where those spaces are then you probably need to hire or consult with people from those spaces. Its no good having a website with an image of all white men on the homepage and wondering why women don’t feel like they belong there.
