These changes have raised important questions about how we track and support early communication development. In our latest blog post, we break down: 1️⃣ What the updates mean 2️⃣ How they differ from previous guidelines 3️⃣ Why these milestones may not tell the whole story Take a read and tell us what you think! #GrandRapidsSpeechTherapy #SpeechTherapyGR #SpeechLanguagePathology #SLPGrandRapids #PediatricSpeechTherapy #SpeechTherapyKids #LanguageDevelopment #EarlyIntervention #FeedingTherapy #AAC #SpeechMilestones #DuncanLakeSpeechTherapy #GRHealth #GrandRapidsFamilies #MichiganSpeechTherapy #InclusiveTherapy #NeuroaffirmingPractice #MichiganSLP #WestMichiganTherapy #SLPeeps #SpeechTherapy #Instaslp #SLPsofinstagram #ASHAIGers

In the evolving landscape of speech-language pathology, a pivotal study has emerged, spotlighting the experiences of autistic #SLPs. This research explores the delicate balance these professionals maintain between their personal identities and their roles within the field, shedding light on the challenges they face, including stigma and ableism, and their neurodiversity-affirming approaches to practice. As an advocate for diversity and inclusion in our profession, and drawing from my own experiences as a university professor and someone who has navigated the academic and professional world with a late diagnosis of ADHD, I recognize the importance of this study. It calls for a deeper understanding and support of #neurodivergent professionals, emphasizing the unique strengths they bring to our field. This study serves as a call to action for our community to more actively embrace the neurodiversity paradigm, ensuring that speech-language pathology is a field where all practitioners and clients feel truly supported. Let's commit to fostering an environment that values and uplifts every voice.

Reining in speech skills! 🐴🌟 Read below ⬇️ as Terri Hutchison, MA, CCC-SLP, highlights how the rhythmic motion of horses helps stimulate sensory systems ⚙️ and improve 📈 focus during speech therapy. "Many patients who experience communication disorders have difficulty with sensory regulation and are consistently moving about the clinic room. These kids struggle to sustain attention to presented therapy tasks. This is often observed with children exhibiting symptoms associated with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Patients who have difficulty attending to therapist-directed activities exhibit less progress. With these types of patients, the speech-language pathologist (SLP) can spend entire treatment sessions week after week trying to establish joint attention. These speech therapy clients who commonly have difficulty with attention in the clinic receive between 2,500 to 3,500 neuro motor inputs via the three-dimensional equine movement. This helps to wake up the patient’s sensory and cognitive systems and improves their ability to attend to therapist-directed tasks. The patient no longer seeks to move about the room and experiences the purposeful equine movement, yielding improvements with positive attentional focus. It is then possible to more effectively engage the patient with purposeful intervention techniques that are often used in a clinical setting. One of the best aspects of speech therapy treatments that incorporate hippotherapy is that patients don't realize it’s therapy! They show improved engagement because they are having fun on a horse." #Hippotherapy #SpeechTherapy #EquineTherapy #SensoryIntegration #SpeechPathology

🐣 Early detection and Early Intervention in speech therapy can make a world of difference for children. But how do you know if a child needs early intervention for their speech and communication? Here are some signs and milestones to look out for 👇 1️⃣ Limited babbling or no words by 12 months 2️⃣ Difficulty following simple instructions 3️⃣ Trouble understanding simple sentences 4️⃣ Lack of eye contact 5️⃣ No single words by 16 months 6️⃣ No phrases by 24 months This isn’t a comprehensive list, so if you’re concerned about a developmental issue, I recommend talking to your pediatrician or reaching out to an SLP about getting a consultation or evaluation. Awareness is the first step! Early intervention can seem scary or intense, but in reality it helps children learn through play (which is great for teaching them both social skills and also making the learning fun) and increase their academic readiness. Early intervention also provides children with the resources and tools they need to prepare them for school and beyond. Questions about early intervention or the process for how to get your child in early intervention? Don’t hesitate to reach out! 👋 I’m Jessica, a Speech Language Pathologist and founder and CEO of EasySLP. We provide affordable, online speech therapy services to treat a wide range of communication disorders. 🌟 Interested in learning more about speech therapy and EasySLP? 📢 Did you know? October is AAC Awareness Month! At Purple Heather, we believe everyone deserves the power to communicate. 🌟 Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a vital support for individuals who face challenges with speech or language, helping them express their thoughts, needs, and emotions. Whether it's through picture boards, speech-generating devices, or communication apps, AAC provides alternative ways for people to interact with the world around them. What is AAC? AAC encompasses all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, and ideas. This can be as simple as gestures, facial expressions, or as complex as using electronic devices that generate speech. AAC can be a short-term aid, such as after surgery, or a long-term solution for people with disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism, or acquired brain injuries. It’s an essential tool for creating inclusive environments where everyone can participate. Every method of communication counts, and by spreading awareness this October, we can help remove the stigma surrounding AAC and build a more inclusive, understanding community. Let’s celebrate the diversity of communication and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard! 💬💜 #AACAwarenessMonth #CommunicationForAll #PurpleHeather #InclusionMatters #AustraliaAAC #DisabilityAwareness

Meet Randy Panzarino, MA, CCC-SLP We asked Randy how he became interested in working with people who stutter: "I became interested in the field of speech-language pathology and the idea of working with people who stutter some time into my own therapy experiences in college. Reflecting on my trials and tribulations, and the radical positive changes that occurred during the holistic treatment intervention I received, I became consumed with curiosity about stuttering, wanting to know more about its nature, and how others dealt and coped with it. I began reading Van Riper and others, learning all I could about this thing I had lived with for so long. It was some time in 2018 when I walked into my mentor's office, Dr. Charlotte Harvey. I said, 'I want to become an SLP.' She replied, 'I know.'" What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering™ Seal mean to Randy? "I wanted to become a part of the amazing network of clinicians that make up Spero Stuttering, an organization that has consistently worked toward representing the voices of people who stutter (PWS) while equipping those who work with PWS and their families. Like other SLPs who hold the Ally of Stuttering Seal, I am continually gaining more competency in the area of stuttering by evaluating new research often, engaging in professional development, as well as attending conferences and events related to stuttering and stuttering support in order to learn more deeply about the lived experiences of stuttering." Finding Your Voice: An Educational Journey Through Aphasia After Stroke In learning about the work of speech-language pathologists, I’ve gained valuable insights into the experiences of individuals living with aphasia after a stroke. Aphasia can present significant communication challenges, but the resilience and determination of those affected, along with the support of their families, is inspiring. While I’ve not experienced this firsthand, I’ve come to appreciate the impact aphasia has on both individuals and their loved ones through the stories shared by professionals. Here are some key insights I've learned: Understanding Aphasia: Aphasia is a communication disorder that can affect a person's ability to speak, understand, read, and write. It is typically caused by brain damage, often as a result of a stroke. Types of Aphasia: There are several types of aphasia, each with its own unique characteristics: Broca's Aphasia: Difficulty forming sentences but an ability to understand speech. Wernicke's Aphasia: Fluent speech that may make little sense. Global Aphasia: Severe impairment in all areas of communication. The Role of Speech Therapy: Speech therapy plays a vital role in recovery. Individuals work with speech-language pathologists to relearn and find new ways to communicate, including gestures, writing, or assistive technology. The Importance of Patience and Support: The journey to recovery involves patience and encouragement from family and friends. Celebrating small victories, like saying a single word or expressing an emotion, can greatly boost confidence and motivation. These insights highlight the importance of speech therapy and community support in helping individuals find their voice again. Have you or someone you know faced the challenges of aphasia? What strategies or resources have been most helpful in your experience? Let’s engage in a meaningful discussion and share insights that can support others on this journey! #AphasiaAwareness #StrokeRecovery #FindingYourVoice #SpeechTherapy #SupportAndCommunity

Effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy-based physical play intervention on empathic ability of children with intellectual disabilities Effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy-Based Physical Play on Children’s Empathy Study Overview This study aimed to see if a sports game intervention based on cognitive-behavioral therapy could improve empathy in children with intellectual disabilities. Methodology A total of 31 children aged 7-8, diagnosed with intellectual developmental disorder, participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: Experimental Group: 17 children underwent an 18-week sports game intervention. Control Group: 19 children participated in regular physical activities without the intervention. To measure the impact, the Griffith Empathy Measure (GEM) questionnaire was used before and after the intervention. Key Findings Initially, there were no significant differences in empathy scores between the two groups. However, after the intervention: The experimental group showed significantly higher empathy scores. They outperformed the control group in post-test scores. Conclusion The cognitive-behavioral therapy-based sports game intervention is effective in enhancing empathy skills in children with intellectual disabilities.
