Tech firms have taken to giving coding tests to applicants. The issue? The 'tests' have nothing to do with the work to be done. Recent grads and/or folks who have practiced may be familiar with the puzzles but this is no measure of the candidate. If you see someone who is writing code like this from scratch, introduce them to the nearest search engine or AI plugin. Playing with toys is fine... for fun. Many highly educated, well reasoned folks describe how coding tests are the only way to qualify people 'efficiently.' I can't help but interpret this as lazy, looking for the 'easy' way to make hiring decisions. An interviewer that can prove a candidate will jump through meaningless hoops is only assured said candidate is likewise willing to be an instruction-following note-taker. There is no substitute for closely reading someone's resume and making sound judgements as to whether to progress to interviews. Probe deeply. Discuss concerns and impressions with current team members and stakeholders. Check references. Again, probe deeply. It takes work to qualify new teammates. Coding tests don't help to reduce that work and more likely cause the Employer to miss the most valuable candidates.
