IN THE NEWS 📰 Earlier this week, BILDCR CEO Brian Hahn spoke with Global News about the City of Calgary's Housing Partnership Conference.   “Our key focus is to understand how BILDCR members can lower barriers to new housing and continue collaborating with our partners at the City of Calgary,” said Hahn.   “The conversation should centre on reducing barriers, particularly time and cost barriers. Earlier this month, America Achieves brought together 50 changemakers as part of the Good Jobs Economy Peer Learning Community–a community of practice supporting local intermediaries and coalitions advancing inclusive, thriving local economies that create clear paths to good jobs for everyone. Our program aims to help these communities build “good jobs economies.” The convening was instrumental in strengthening relationships, building expertise, encouraging collaboration, and setting the program for the next six months of essential conversations and shared progress. This comes at an exciting time for our country as Congress passed two public policy and funding sources to support place-based local and state economic and workforce development.  Also this week, MacKenzie Scott announced $15 million in funding for America Achieves work. Both milestones build on our organizational track record informing policy and assisting several communities in developing and securing federal funding for place-based bipartisan initiatives like #TechHubs.   We are so grateful to all 12 GJE Peer Learning Community participating regions: Borderplex-El Paso, Detroit, Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul, Greater Philadelphia, Madison-Milwaukee, Montana-North Dakota, New Orleans, Richmond-Petersburg, South Florida, Southern West Virginia, Syracuse-Buffalo-Rochester, Tulsa. Also, thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event, including four #TechHubs, five #BBBRC, and six #GoodJobsChallenge U.S. Economic Development Administration grantees. A couple weeks ago, I sat down with Erienne Olesh and Ryan Watson to gather learnings from their recent reorg into West Virginia University’s Office of Innovation and Commercialization. Their newly centralized office now provides “one front door” for all the university’s tech transfer services, whether you’re a WVU researcher or part of the WVU innovation ecosystem. Really excited to share that our project "Harnessing Global Standards for Technological Leadership" led with my collaborators Dr John Moffat (Durham University Business School) and Dr Xin Deng (Alliance Manchester Business School), has been funded by the Innovation & Research Caucus. We are pleased to join a group of wonderful research teams to contribute to the UK innovation and research ecosystem and governance. 🚀  Our project tackles the critical issue of business leadership and power in setting global technology #standards (e.g., AI, semiconductors, 5G and IoT). These standards are vital for driving innovation, ensuring compatibility and staying competitive globally. Introducing the Tech Policy Design Institute (TPDi) - 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 🚀 Most of you have probably noticed I’m pretty interested in tech policy… but what you may not know, is that I’ve dreamed for a long-time of being part of establishing a new think tank to grow Australia’s tech policy landscape. Enter TPDi stage left! I couldn’t think of two more inspiring leaders to set up a think tank with than my incomparable co-founders Johanna Weaver and Sunita Kumar. It’s been a summer of hustle, but we did it. This is in no small part thanks to the momentum set by the incredible team at ANU’s Tech Policy Centre, as well as the strong demand across the ecosystem for an informed and independent tech policy voice. The encouragement and support we have received to take this leap has been so motivating, and we are grateful to the organisations who have already backed our vision of using policy to shape tech for the benefit of humanity. TPDi will work with government, industry, civil society, and academia to achieve this through research, education, commentary and community building (calling all #TechPolicyTragics) It’s a privilege to do this important (and fun!) work with the support and guidance of so many tech leaders that I respect and admire on our board and group of special advisers.
