Well we made into Punta Arenas, though not without a battle. The southern tip of Chile has always been a place of dragons and sea monsters swallowing whole ships and terrifying crews for hundreds of years. Watch the famous video if you've never seen it. Absolutely fascinating those men were hard as chiselled stone. Nowadays we know it's not superstition but it's everything you'd expect from a location where the longest mountain range in the world meets the South Pacific, Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans in one narrow spot. The Drake Passage. While we enjoy a privileged view from the flight levels above it still presents a host of challenges and risks to aviation. We got out of Rothera just ahead of some bad weather and after a short shuttle climb to get above the icing had a good crossing. Punta however had other ideas as the actual weather deteriorated rapidly at the end of our journey and quite opposite of the forecast. SCCI 081700Z 09015KT 9999 OVC003 11/10 Q0982 NOSIG Unfortunately with wind limitations we had only a non precision GPS approach available and on the first attempt we had some equipment failures resulting in a go around. The second attempt had to be made as a step down approach right to minimums in horrible conditions and we made contact at the last minute and we're able to land. Its one of those times you really appreciate how slow and stable the Goonie Bird is and it only needs 1/3 of most runways to land and take off. So Antarctica is behind us thanks to the combined effort of the Norwegians at Troll and the Germans at Neumayer who helped us load, fuel and go after dropping our final mission cargo. Special thanks to them, otherwise we would have missed that precious weather window. In case you were wondering what the precous cargo we waited for all week? Boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables for Neumayer. Seems silly to a person with a grocery store on every street corner but the brave over winterers at Neumayer will appreciate the last bananas, peaches and oranges they will see for the next 8-9 months!!! Slowly catching up on sharing what all happened last week -- and it was plenty! We kicked off the "Edinburgh Water Week" with Paul O'Callaghan's latest movie "Our Blue World - A Water Odyssey". If you haven't seen it yet, I cannot recommend watching it enough. Absolutely excellent story telling Spectacular videography And of course - it's about water I was moved to tears while watching it - and I was not the only one. More than just raising awareness about the importance to water, it re-ignites the sense of purpose, the vision, the inspiration to work on water. I am sure I'm not the only one who's had moments of thinking it may be better to just give up working on water and move to a different field of work (hellooo yoga teacher training 🤣) However, I never did seriously think of leaving "water" as I find it hard to imagine another area of work that is as important (to me at least) as water - and I'd probably always feel guilty of leaving this work behind knowing in what a critical moment we're at. For anyone is currently at this "low" I can highly recommend watching this movie - it will quickly lift your spirits and remind you why you're doing what you're doing and inspire you to do even more. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site was instated in 1990 for exemplifying the outstanding physical features of glacial geological processes — including ice fields, remnant valley glaciers, canyons and exceptional examples of erosion and deposition of the Rocky Mountain Biogeographical Province. It also includes a number of unique cultural landscapes and sites such as Abbot Hut (also a National Historic Site) that has served as a basecamp for climbers between the summits of Mount Lefroy and Mount Victoria in Banff National Park. New research from the University of Calgary examined the two most common approaches to Abbot Pass, and how a warming climate has changed access and safety.
