Indigenous Veterans Day – November 8, 2024 On this Indigenous Veterans Day, we take a moment to remember and honour the brave men and women who have fought valiantly, many making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms and rights. Their courage and dedication deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. It’s important to recognize, however, that Indigenous veterans did not always receive the same benefits and recognition as their non-Indigenous counterparts upon returning home. This inequality underscores the ongoing struggles for justice and fairness within our communities. This day becomes even more significant as we now use it to give Indigenous veterans the recognition and honour they were denied, acknowledging their sacrifices in the way they always deserved. Indigenous Veterans Day also serves as an opportunity to educate others about the inequities Indigenous veterans faced—and the broader challenges that Indigenous Peoples continue to encounter today. Today, let us stand together in gratitude, recognizing the sacrifices and contributions of Indigenous veterans. Their courage continues to inspire us as we work toward equality and respect for all who serve. #Treaty1 #TreatyOne #Indigenous #Veterans #FirstNations #Honour #Remembrance

For #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we are spotlighting New York Health Foundation's New York State Minority Veterans Needs Assessment. Over the past 30 years, women and racial/ethnic minorities have increasingly joined the military, diversifying our veteran population. By 2040, racial/ethnic minorities are expected to make up 37% of New York’s veteran population, and women will comprise more than 10% by 2025. This needs assessment provides key insights into how we can better support minority veterans. Understanding their needs will help improve services for all veterans. From the battlefields of the American Revolution to the deserts of Kuwait, women have been serving in the military in one form or another for more than 200 years. They have had to overcome decades of obstacles to get to where they are today: serving in greater numbers, in combat roles and in leadership positions all around the world. Here is a look at the history of women in the military, how their roles have changed over the years and how the USO has supported them since our founding as an organization in 1941. https://lnkd.in/eaKQfZ5

Today, on Veterans Day, I am reflecting on the unwavering sense of purpose that drove my father and so many of his generation to serve during World War II. In an era without instant communication, where letters were the only lifeline to home, they stepped up and fought with a strong commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy. This sense of purpose to the principles of liberty, equality and justice is one we must continue to uphold. While we express our gratitude to veterans for bearing the cost of freedom, we must also recognize our shared responsibility to protect these values. In a world that faces unprecedented challenges to democracy and freedom, the question we must ask ourselves is: How do we each contribute to safeguarding these ideals in our daily lives? This is the duty of every citizen — and we can each make a difference through our individual actions, conversations, and choices. And with current events in mind, I am reminded of how fragile these values can be. Today and every day, I hope we consider how to take part in preserving freedom and democracy in our own lives and the lives of our children. Happy Veterans Day to all. #NegativesToPositives #VeteransDay #equality #freedom
