Please share widely with any Veteran you know. It's important also to read the further detail in the comments section of the original post. Of note, if you don't feel connected or comfortable with the first person you see, that's perfectly normal. Sounds silly, however your search for the right support needs to be treated like dating. You don't have to take what's immediately available (and you're not expected to). Pay attention to how your body feels in their presence. Sometimes we will have physiological reactions, however subtle, (notice if you feel increasing discomfort in your posture, or is your body softening as you interact). Also ask yourself, do they get you, do you feel heard, safe, genuinely connected and respected. Nobody 'clicks' with everyone, and persisting with a practitioner you don't feel connected with will drastically hinder your healing, and likely have some giving up all together. You are able to ask for a different person, and it may take a few to find someone who you feel truly gets you. Nobody will be offended. Practitioners expect it to happen from time to time and they too encourage the process of persisting until a good match is made. From personal experience I know for sure that when you get that 'right' person the difference between that experience and a mismatch is profound. #veteransupport #veterans #mentalhealth #womenveterans #defence

This is an acceptable organizational standard. Hell, it's the acceptable human standard! It's acceptable because there is the high-pressure nature of their roles, but at the same time, the added expectation that every single individual in service can cope with the ever increasing stressors independently. I say, "Not anymore!" This acceptance is perpetuating the cycle of stress and inadequate mental health supports. This acceptance not only affects the individuals, but their families as well. Ultimately, this acceptance will cost the quality of service that each person is able to provide. I say, "It's time we set the acceptable standards for our own health!" #highfunctioning #unwell #stressors #standards #youmatter #notanymore #acceptable #unacceptable #raisethebar #setthebar #bethebar #organizations #mentalhealth #wy20 #support #whatsyourtwenty #firstresponders #military #service #armedforces #veterans #soldiers #expectations #ptsi #ptsd #cptsd #osi #trauma #family #families

Mental Health First Aid is a valuable resource that can make a difference in the lives of the more than 22 million veterans, their families, and the communities they live in. Family members and personnel working with military and families are often not aware of how to engage veterans with mental illnesses and addictions. In addition to the impact of military service on the veteran, each has a circle of family (significant other, children, parents, siblings, etc.) and friends who are also impacted by their military service. Why Mental Health First Aid for Veterans, service members, and their families? While military service often fosters resilience in individuals and families, some service members may experience mental health or substance use challenges. Thirty percent of active duty and reserve military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have a mental health condition requiring treatment – approximately 730,000 men and women, with many experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression. Sadly, less than 50 percent of returning veterans in need receive any mental health treatment. The Veterans Administration reports that approximately 20 veterans die by suicide every day.
