It's the Economy, Peace, Prosperity and Empowerment, stupid! It's about Women, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Israel! When I founded iKare Innovation 8 years ago, I had in mind to consult for the best (French 🥖 🐸 ) corporates, AND find partners for the best Israeli startups, assisting the best solution providers that will help mitigate and reduce climate change impacts, AND work with the best talents, AND teach the most open minded students AND give the best speed mentoring I can to whoever is asking for my insights, AND participe to the most interesting events, AND plant the seeds of peace and empowerment everywhere I go. What I did not plan, is that all that can happen all in the same time, based on the same day-to-day actions and attitude. iKare means the "most important", the "essence". It means also the farmer, the labourer. Believe me, I "labour" a lot, and sometimes I even harvest the fruits of my labour. LEADERSHIP CONVERSATION WITH WITH YOLANDA CUBA, Group Regional Vice President - Southern and East Africa at MTN Talking strategy and tech, celebrating freedom The month of April is Freedom month in South Africa. This is the month in 1994 that saw South African’s first Democratic elections. It is a month that - after hundreds of years of exclusion, oppression and dehumanization - saw the heralding of a new era that would recognise the full humanity of people that look like me and other people of colour in the statute as well as in social and political structures. A new time of access to quality education, equal opportunity in the work place and equal treatment under the law was upon us. The time since has been imperfect. Much has been achieved, much could have been done better and a number of things have gone awry. Yet, I am certain that our guest for the month of April, Yolanda Cuba CA(SA), is an example of the realisation of the dream that many a freedom struggle hero, and hopeful ancestor, held close to their hearts through the centuries. Whether we are speaking of Makhanda, Charlotte Maxeke, Sol Plaatje, Albert Luthuli or the women who marched to the union buildings like Lilian Ngoyi, Sophia de Bruyn and Helen Joseph, amongst many thousands who hoped and fought - Yolanda surely represents what they hoped would be possible in a free South Africa. In a much freer South Africa, she worked to increase the surface area allowing for opportunity to come her way and has leveraged and maximised the opportunities that have. This has, inter alia, been illustrated by Yolanda being amongst the first leaders to emphasize the importance of leveraging technology to unlock growth in business and society. She was a pioneer in embracing technology for business strategy - rethinking business models, successfully improving commercial results and driving social impact. Today, a business strategy that doesn’t integrate or centre the role of technology in a business is unthinkable. This is the backdrop to why I am thrilled about the upcoming Inno Yolo Leadership, Tech and Career Conversation with Yolanda Cuba. The pioneering and trailblazing approach to technology and business she has demonstrated over the years is a perfect symbol of what we hope a free South Africa, free Africa and free world can continue to make possible. RE-globalization: Better trade for a better world The need for digital entrepreneurship skills is undeniable, especially to ensure full participation in the global economy. Sadly, talents in developing countries have often been denied equal opportunities to claim their rightful space. This year's #WTOPublicForum, titled “Re-globalization: Better Trade for a Better World,” is particularly special as it marks the World Trade Organization's 30th anniversary. The theme gives me hope that we are moving toward a new world order, one where inclusive trade relationships are essential for global development. Over the years, I’ve refined my public speaking skills, allowing me to share my humble experiences while learning from diverse and knowledgeable individuals around the world. As I gear up for today's IIBA South Africa Chapter "Celebrating Women in Tech" event, I've been reflecting on the often unseen side of event preparation. From the missteps and mix-ups to the unplanned moments of humor, it’s a reminder that perfection is a moving target. In the spirit of authenticity, I’m sharing some behind-the-scenes bloopers that didn’t make the final cut. These moments, though imperfect, are a testament to the resilience and adaptability we embrace as we prepare for major events. Every stumble and every correction is part of the journey. It’s through these challenges that we grow and improve. So here’s to the unscripted moments, the learning curves, and the perseverance that define our path to success. Let’s celebrate the process as much as the outcome. After all, it’s the journey that shapes us, and every mistake is a step towards mastery. Last weekend, I was delighted to attend for the second time the Rencontres Économiques d'Aix-en-Provence, a prestigious French forum where business leaders, economists, and civil society members converged to discuss the theme of “Connecting Worlds”. We discussed a topic close to my heart: European competitiveness. While Europe leads in luxury goods, food, manufacturing and sustainability, we lag in crucial areas like corporate investment—only half the level of U.S. firms—and gender diversity in STEM fields. Moreover, high essential costs, especially for energy and some imported goods, are also a challenge for the region. We all know there are many things that can be done at institutional level and there is a very rich debate about them; however, we discussed some steps that we, as private sector, can also take to address some of these challenges: 1️⃣ Support Innovation: Aid start-ups in scaling and assist companies with energy transitions. 2️⃣ Encourage Scale: Support infra-country mergers to strengthen our market presence. 3️⃣ Foster Talents: Invest in education and opportunities, particularly for STEM (with an extra focus on women) and to promote social mobility. 4️⃣ Leverage More External Capital: Bolster private equity capital and capital markets to finance growth and global expansion.
