Becca our Specialist SEND Teacher is talking to us about SEN-related jargon! The graduated response is the process by which children’s support needs are identified and met at different levels through their time in school. All children in school have access to a universal level of support that includes things like routine adaptations to teaching, simple equipment adaptations and interventions that might be available to all (such as small group work for reading). What is considered ‘standard’ universal provision will vary a little across schools in different areas. Next comes targeted provision, where more specialist and individualised supports are put in place. These supports are identified and monitored through a process called ‘assess, plan, do, review’ Lastly comes specialist level provision, where targeted provision has not been able to meet the child’s needs, and a higher level of specialist involvement is needed and perhaps a more specialist education setting. It’s at this point that an EHCP may become necessary. #30daysofSALVE Day 1️⃣6️⃣ Children staying at our residential site are given catch-up sessions in core education subjects such as math and English by our on-site teacher. We aim to prepare them for attending a school or vocational setting once they are resettled back with their families. Many young people who have been on the streets have very limited experiences of education. Some have never been to school. Our on-site education programme aims to break down the social barriers and negative perceptions that they may have about themselves and feelings that they are behind their peers. It also aims to normalise learning and reinforce how vital learning is at all stages of life. We recognise that, while on the streets, the need for children to meet their day-to-day requirements means that for most education is not prioritised.
