World Soil Day, observed annually on December 5th, emphasises the importance of soil in ecosystems and agriculture. In 2024, the focus of World Soil Day will be on Soil Health, highlighting its role in boosting biodiversity, enhancing food security, and tackling climate change. The Soil and Water Laboratory, part of Woodlands Dairy's Sustainability Department, conducts rigorous analyses on soil and water samples, focusing on biological and chemical properties. The lab conducts active carbon analyses, which show the contribution of pastures in sequestering carbon. The laboratory also provides precise data to monitor soil health across our pasture-based dairy farms, enabling researchers to assess nutrient levels, microbial health, and other key soil indicators critical to maintaining productive and resilient pastures. Soil is a dynamic ecosystem that nurtures plant life and supports our food systems. Improper soil and water management practices affect soil erosion, biodiversity, soil fertility, water quality, and quantity. Because Woodlands Dairy is dedicated to implementing sustainable agricultural practices that foster soil health, amongst others, they've partnered with Trace and Save, an independent organisation that analyses data gathered on our producer farms and advises on regenerative farming practices. As we observe World Soil Day 2024, it's a perfect moment to reflect on the backbone of sustainable agriculture and food security. https://lnkd.in/dx7-Vvr https://lnkd.in/guqY4avM #WoodlandsDairy #HomeofFirstChoice #Sustainability #sustainabilitymatters #UNSDG15 #FortheGoodofAll

***Why is Soil Important?*** Soil is more than just dirt; it is a dynamic, living ecosystem that is fundamental to agriculture and the environment. Here’s why soil is essential: Nutrient Supply: Soil provides plants with essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These nutrients are vital for plant growth, development, and yield. Healthy soil enhances nutrient availability, ensuring robust crop production. Water Retention and Filtration: Soil acts as a natural reservoir, storing water and making it available to plants during dry periods. It also filters and purifies water, removing contaminants and preventing water pollution. Support for Plant Roots: Soil offers physical support to plants, anchoring their roots and enabling them to stand upright and access water and nutrients efficiently. Habitat for Soil Organisms: Soil is teeming with life, from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi to larger organisms like earthworms and insects. These organisms play crucial roles in decomposing organic matter, cycling nutrients, and improving soil structure. Carbon Sequestration: Soil acts as a significant carbon sink, storing carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere as CO2. This helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. Ecosystem Services: Healthy soil supports biodiversity, helps regulate the Earth’s climate, and contributes to the resilience of ecosystems. It plays a key role in controlling pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemical interventions. In light of these vital functions, maintaining soil health is imperative. Practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, and organic amendments can significantly enhance soil quality and sustainability. As agricultural professionals, it's our responsibility to adopt and promote these sustainable practices. Join us in prioritizing soil health for a more sustainable and productive agricultural future. 🌱 #ErimetandCaben #Agriculture #SoilHealth #SustainableFarming #Agribusiness #FoodSecurity #SoilScience #ClimateChange

Happy World Soil Day! Soil is essential to agriculture and life. But admittedly, it can be easy to overlook. So, let’s remind ourselves what it does for us: 🥗 Soil, together, with water, supports 95% of our food production. It’s been referred to as the world’s food basket. 💧 Soil stores carbon (around 1,500 billion tons worldwide). It stores water too (one cubic meter holds around 250 liters of water). 🌻 And it hosts an enormous variety of organisms. It’s estimated that at least half of the world’s biodiversity lives in soil. But soil cannot be taken for granted. It’s non-renewable, and since it’s full of organic matter, it can degrade and die if not looked after. How can we farm in a way that harnesses soil’s potential, without degrading it? At its core, that’s what #RegenerativeAgriculture is about. In fact, it can go even further: not just avoiding negative outcomes for soil, but encouraging positive ones, nurturing and restoring it year after year. Regeneration is a complex puzzle, but from my perspective, I’m proud of the growing role that biological innovations are playing. Whether it’s through our partnerships and research into biological technologies for nitrogen fixation and carbon sequestration; or through specific innovations such as Serenade Soil Activ, which directly supports soil through combating disease and increasing nutrient availability. It all helps bring the required solutions closer to growers. And if we ever need a reminder of the real-world importance of this: just look at the soil beneath your feet. #WorldSoilDay #Soil #SoilHealth #Biologicals #Innovation
