Looking for some industry insights this August? 👀 Dive into the fascinating world of steel deconstruction with this must-read from the American Institute of Steel Construction. It's all about precision, just like our work at Applied Bolting Technology™!
How do you deconstruct an out-of-commission hospital, skip the electric arc furnace, and directly reuse the steel in other structures? Find out in the newest issue of Modern Steel Construction! The August issue explores this ambitious and pioneering steel reuse project in Boulder, Colo. You’ll also read an expert discussion of steel detailing and find out how 2024 AISC Lifetime Achievement Award winner Robert E Shaw Jr hatched the idea to create the Student Steel Bridge Competition. A mic drop from half a century ago. Here is what J. G. Sunley of the Forest Products Research Laboratory - a father of timber strength grading - had to say about rate of growth (meaning ring width). "Rate of growth can be regarded as having limited value as far as far as evaluation of strength is concerned". In “The strength properties of timber” published by MTP Construction in 1974, which is the Internet Archive here: https://lnkd.in/gThiu6C3

NEW RESOURCE: How to Successfully Cost Manage a Mass Timber Project A determining factor in the success of a mass timber project—and whether it goes forward at all—is the general contractor’s ability to provide informed cost estimates from the earliest design stage. However, unlike other materials, there isn’t a hundred years of tradition and shared experience to guide budgeting, cost management, competitive procurement, or readily available cost benchmarking. Use this paper to help bridge that gap with step-by-step guidance for minimizing whole project costs and maximizing the value of mass timber projects. Download a copy: https://lnkd.in/d967urNJ Are you at the International Mass Timber Conference? We have physical copies of this resource and more at the WoodWorks booth & the LIVE mass timber construction demonstration.

Thanks John Stulen and Woodworks for allowing me the opportunity to speak at this year's conference. I thoroughly enjoy getting up and sharing our journey and projects completed and underway. Another great conference where I felt the shift in conversation is finally happening in mass timber construction. The industry has been trying to prove to the world that Mass Timber buildings are viable for some time now and the conversation is moving from, "look, we can do this" to "ok we've proven this works but what are the other implications of mass timber construction?" Moisture management, fire implications and wrong/false cost understanding are in my view the three main points that as an industry we need to work through together. For this to work and keep working all stake holders need to be part of the solution and not look at each other waiting for someone else to solve it.
