What are the embodied carbon and economic implications of selecting mass timber structural systems compared to functionally equivalent steel and concrete systems? Our Mass Timber Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Series compares mass timber/light-frame wood buildings to functionally equivalent alternates, with results to date illustrating that the embodied carbon benefits and biogenic carbon storage potential of a mass timber structural system can be achieved with little dollar cost premium relative to traditional systems. Two studies are online now and several more are coming soon. Download them now at woodworks.org: https://lnkd.in/e9duXM6t This series is being developed collaboratively by KL&A Engineers & Builders / KL&A Team Carbon and WoodWorks with funding from the USDA U.S. Forest Service and the Softwood Lumber Board.

In today’s Build Review video post, Ricky McLean addresses a common question in modern sustainable mass timber construction: What’s the optimal grid option for mass timber projects: post and beam or post and plate? Ricky delves into the comparison between the two connection systems, offering a comprehensive insight that’s valuable for architects, engineers, and developers alike. Ricky also touches on real-world applications, referencing the Brock Commons Student Housing project as a notable example of post and plate construction. #Construction #Building #MassTimber #PostAndBeam #PostAndPlate #StructuralDesign #OptimalBuilding #SustainableConstruction

Navigating the Timber in Construction Roadmap. The Timber in Construction Roadmap (https://lnkd.in/eavUpNV4) addresses issues in the timber supply chain and construction sector methodically. It emphasises not only the use of home-grown timber but also the education and training required to build a workforce proficient in timber construction. We are passionate and committed to supporting this road map to find building solutions which can complement brick and block build. To find out more about timber frame systems, our methodology and counter arguments that dispel some of the myths around traditional masonry versus timber, please read our MD Malcolm Thomson's article: https://lnkd.in/eXsskATk

Wood’s popularity as a construction material has surged due to its impressive carbon sequestration capacity. Wood is about half carbon by weight, allowing the material to perform significantly better than others—such as concrete and steel—from a carbon emissions perspective. The realization of wood’s massive carbon storage capacity has encouraged much of the recent proliferation of new timber structures. However, we cannot rely on the amount of carbon in wood alone to meet environmental targets without considering the material’s life cycle. Wood only acts as an effective carbon bank if it does not rot, burn, or otherwise deteriorate. Although some eventual fates of timber construction—such as fire—may occur without our intention, other ends are inherently avoidable. https://lnkd.in/d436qQDt
