One of the truths about the privilege of #leadership is that most of the time the grueling experiences that tend to feel lonely, and the painful decisions, experiences, and extended moments are often unseen, unnoticed, unshared, or minimized.
Instead, most of the focus goes to what looks and sounds easier, better, prettier. It tends to feel better to the ego. Let's face it - the awards and glory celebrate and showcase the polished up version of the victory.
The reality is - when you're a #LeadershipAthlete - there is pride in the effort - the struggle - that goes into getting through the hardest parts. There's no need to hide those realities. There's actually reason to embrace them, maximize the learnings and evolution, and share the lessons to positively impact others - especially the people in your care.
I thought of this last night when I received this photo from the 100 mile mountain bike race I did this past Saturday. The picture I posted in this week's #SUNDAYSTORIES was one taken by a friend pre-race. I thought that was the only up-close one I had from the day, until she sent me this one yesterday. 🤪🥴😫 ... ICYM that edition or want a refresher - the link is in the comments below 👇
This shot represents the reality of me racing 100 mountain bike miles. It's not easy, nor pretty, and I surely struggle through grueling extended moments. And, sometimes it feels lonely out there in the expensive terrain despite being surrounded by hundreds of others doing their version of the same thing.
Thankfully, my husbabe is my trusted teammate out there. His presence and support help keep the loneliness and self-induced pity party at bay (most of the time).
Why am I posting this crazy looking photo of myself? Because this is the authentic experience out there in the wild that I'm most proud of getting through. Even if I had won the race, this would still represent what I'd be most proud of getting through. Plus, it gives a look at the reality to anyone thinking they may want to try it. Hopefully you're seeing the paralell to the leadership journey.
Here's the thing - endurance racing isn't for everyone and neither is being a #LeadershipAthlete. If you decide to get into the game - doing the training, the prep, and finding ways to win - along side teammates - through the struggles are table stakes.
As my friend, and fellow #LeadershipAthlete, Ashlee Huffman said in a recent catch-up call - " You're right, Shauna - Leadership really is a sport!"
GAME ON, #LEADERS!
