𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀? It is hardly a surprise that most job posts these days have degree requirements. Degrees are used as proxies for skills, professionalism, and basic competence - this is a phenomenon known as degree inflation. For companies, degree inflation is problematic as it limits access to a wider talent pool, making it difficult to fill roles. Moreover, it affects millions of individuals from low-income and marginalized backgrounds, who have the skills and ambition to do excellent work and build fulfilling careers. Sometimes, even when individuals have a degree, it may not be recognized due to a lack of standardization across foreign education systems and job markets. Employers hold tremendous power to correct this opportunity divide by rethinking their hiring practices. This is why moving from a credential-based system to a competency/skills-based system is not just sound business logic; it’s also a moral imperative. Identifying the exact skills required for a job is not straightforward, and discerning these qualities in job applicants via structured interviews and standardized feedback collection isn’t easy either. However, with the advancements in AI and tools like ours, it has become much easier than it used to be. To wrap up, here’s a photo of me receiving my degree, something that many talented individuals don’t get the privilege to do. What are your thoughts on skills-based recruitment? Have you had any experience/challenges with it? #SkillsBasedRecruitment #EquityInHiring #InclusiveWorkplace #TalentAcquisition #FutureOfWork #AIinHR #AIhiring
