A strong media profile is crucial in giving industry and professional associations a platform to provide a loud and clear voice for their members. Yet, it appears many associations across Australia and NZ are struggling to get media traction. Of the association CEOs surveyed for Bespoken’s inaugural Association CEO Index 2024, only 36 per cent felt they had enough of a media profile to draw attention to a key issue or challenge facing their sector or profession, which is a critical element of success as an association leader. It’s a sobering statistic that underscores the need for associations to invest in a strategic media plan, which is beneficial because: ✅ Members see value in proactive media coverage as it shows their association is publicly addressing, and advocating for, the issues that matter to them. ✅ Media coverage increases an association’s visibility and connection among target stakeholders, including key decision-makers, and increases the network for future members. ✅ Being featured in the media can provide a vehicle for industry, and the wider public, to unite on an issue and lead change. 🌎You’re taking your association global - What’s your International Expansion Model? In a previous post we talked about our motivation for going global - next well talk about how we might do it… ⚖️When taking our associations global it’s very tempting to try and establish ourselves in the same way as we did at home. 🙈As someone who has moved many times between cities, states, counties and continents, it’s very easy to assume that things are similar enough between locations to ignore. The truth is usually surprising, and the differences can be subtle to darn right huge! ❤️It’s a good idea to at least have a friend in the regions you want to go, who can advise. But that still may not be enough, having a 💼business partner may also prove compelling. And not to belabor the point, you might not want to try building from the ground up, so consider 🪽cooperating with local organizations or even 🤝merging with a trans-continental body. Remember that building out your organization locally is a task, with thousands of miles between you, that’s a stack of complexity. 🧮Make sure to do the math, it’s going to cost you one way or the other, make informed decisions, don’t try and wing it. I had a fantastic time last week at the European Association Summit and Awards! It was great to see so many high-level professionals from the association sector come together. Kudos to ESAE - European Society of Association Executives for organising such a successful event! As a panellist in the “Leading, Managing, Innovating: Finding the Perfect Mix” session, I shared insights on how association professionals can adopt management, leadership, and innovation approaches to enhance their activities: Example 1️⃣ 👉 Strategic Plan 👀 Management perspective: Track the progress of the strategic plan and report achievements to association members. 📢 Leadership perspective: Include operational and personnel considerations alongside political and legislative priorities. Successful political objectives rely on effective operations and motivated staff. 💡 Innovative perspective: Implement Objectives Key Results (OKRs) to define clear outcomes, break down activities into actionable steps, and foster collaborative goal-setting among staff and members. Example 2️⃣ 👉 People and Team Work 👀 Management perspective: Foster trust and respect among staff, empower them in their roles, and promote teamwork. 📢 Leadership perspective: Motivate and retain top talent by recognising achievements, celebrating successes, and implementing transparent performance evaluations for professional growth. 💡 Innovative Perspective: Cultivate a positive and inclusive organisational culture by establishing and embodying association values that inspire and engage staff. Following the panel, we had an interactive co-creation session where the audience, divided into five groups facilitated by the panellists, shared valuable insights and concrete examples of managing, leading, and innovating.
