If you know me, you know how passionate I am about access to quality and inclusive education so much so that I had to ensure my final year undergrad project/assignment be on building an inclusive educational tool with efforts to supporting the SDG goal number 4.
June 16, well known in South Africa as Youth Day, we are given the opportunity to reflect and remember the brave young souls of Soweto who fought for equal education in 1976.
Their courage ignited a fire that continues to burn brightly. It's a day to look back and see how far we've come – many of us stand here today as living testaments to the sacrifices made for quality education as entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders shaping the world around us. We stand on the shoulders of giants.
However, the journey continues. While access to education has improved, many young people still struggle to find & secure meaningful employment after graduation.
We must acknowledge that the fight for quality, inclusive education continues. There are still far too many who lack access to quality learning opportunities, regardless of race, background, or ability.
As we prepare to relax for the public holiday that this Youth Day brings , let's actively recommit ourselves to the fight. The baton has been passed to us. We have the responsibility to ensure every child in South Africa has a seat at the table, a chance to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
In the South Africa we live in today, here's how you and I be part of the solution:
1. Let us amplify the voices of students and educators. What are the challenges they face? How can we create a more inclusive learning environment?
2. We need to continue to advocate for policies that promote equal access to education.
3. Volunteer your time and skills to mentor young people or support educational institutions.
But importantly let us hold ourselves and our leaders accountable for creating a truly inclusive education system.
Together, let's honor the legacy of the Soweto Uprising by actively contributing towards building an education system that celebrates diversity, empowers all learners, and shapes a brighter future for South Africa. #YouthDay #EducationForAll #InclusiveEducation
