Christmas is around the corner and whilst this is a joyous time of year for many, December does bring it’s challenges, most significantly is the struggle to disconnect from work, with many employees struggling to manage workloads as the year draws to a close. Lesley Cooper's article for Workplace Wellbeing Professional, highlights the importance of the the proposed introduction of the ‘Right to Disconnect’ law. A similar model that was adopted in Ireland, Belgium and most recently Australia allows employees to separate from work and not be required to engage in work-related communication outside of their usual working hours. Research shows that currently 67% of UK employees feel unable to fully switch off from work or maintain personal boundaries. Whether it’s employee productivity, the loneliness of remote workers, or the ongoing return-to-office mandates, workplace research has been making headline news since COVID turned the world upside down. But despite the flood of data, one headline that flew under the radar was about workplace wellbeing. Research from CIPD found that 2023 marked the year with the highest number of sick days taken by employees - yes, even more than during the height of the pandemic! Employee wellbeing is a complex equation to dissect, but in this blog I've given my opinion on how organizations can take a more active role in improving overall wellbeing. No Tesla, it doesn't involve turning up at the house of sick employees 🙄.

Flexible working isn't everyone's preferred working model, but it has a huge impact on the wellbeing of those who value it (and rely on it to piece their various responsibilities together). "When it comes to wellbeing at work, employees would choose general improvements in workplace culture over reactive wellness interventions. If employers continue to insist on focusing on the symptoms over the root causes, such as unsustainable workload, poor management or lack of flexibility, they are unlikely to improve employee wellbeing." Paul Devoy, chief executive of Investors In People #FlexibleWorking

The Wellbeing Perks Don’t Work! says Paul Devoy, CEO of Investors in People. For me, the first step to employee wellbeing is ensuring people have work-life harmony. The real 'gift' is time—the ability to combine work with the other things that matter in your life. Once that foundation is in place, then by all means, bring on the other 'stuff'. I wonder how many companies have introduced a new wellbeing initiative or strategy, while not knowing how people are feeling about their work-life harmony and their ability to work flexibly. As of last month, employees in Australia working for larger organisations can officially refuse to monitor or respond to after-hours work communications. This shift empowers employees to establish boundaries and prioritise their wellbeing. Experts like Heidrick & Struggles’ Dr Fiona McIntosh, Fifty Acres’ Jo Scard, and Dayforce’s Brian Donn offer their perspectives on this significant change. #RightToDisconnect #WorkLifeBalance
